Check this out!
When you see the gun come out of the car you can hear a “click”. The guy stuck a loaded gun in the cops face and pulled the trigger – the hammer fell on an empty chamber- the cop moved back and the guy fired a round and missed the cop - the cop emptied his gun and killed the guy.
Resolution is good enough to blow it up into fullscreen. Good job, officer!
Wow, the usual suspects are slow today. I fully expected to hear the “Ohhhh, but the guy was driving away! He was no longer a threat! This cop is a murderer!” bullshit by now.
By the way, I notice a 6 person jury had to rule on this situation. Is this common? Obviously, they unanimously agreed that shooting back was the right move.
When I started the thread, I kind of expected that reaction from some of the Dopers. There isn’t any ambiguity in my mind on this one. You use deadly force against an officer in order to evade arrest you’re going to get it back.
After watching it again, I couldn’t help but laugh when the officer is breathlessly calling in the situation on the radio (and at this point he doesn’t know the fate of the driver) after emptying his pistol and as you follow the taillights of the fleeing vehicle then you see that white, electric “pop” and hear the vehicle crash and the officer’s all “…and suspect just crashed into a utility pole…”
I think if you fire upon an officer you can pretty much expect to be dead. I’m not happy that the man died, I don’t think it’s cause for celebration or anything, but I don’t doubt for a second the officer did the right thing.
I just watched the video, and that was crazy. It just came out of nowhere. It’s amazing reading the officer’s account of what happened and then watching it happen – so many thoughts and decisions to make in just seconds.
I feel bad for the cop though. I essentially agree with Mahaloth–the cop was terrified and he killed someone in self-defense, and no matter how justified that killing, it’s probably going to stay with him for a long time. I doubt he feels much like celebrating.
