WHat are some crazy laws in your municipality? I’m not talking the obscure “A Man may not make love to a cow on Main Street on Alternate Wednesdays if it is raining” - but the ones that can affect commerce.
A couple of examples:
I live near Palm Springs. The City of Palm Springs does not allow the word “motel” to be used. This tourist city has places to stay like an “inn”, “hotel”, “resort”, “chalet”, “villas”, “suites”, every possible combination except MOTEL. Guess they thought it was a seedy place to stay, but you should see some of the dumpy “inns”.
An exception: Motel 6 was located in a previously unincorporated area which was later annexed by the city. That stuck.
*I know that in the City of Las Vegas, adult establishments can be totally nude, or sell alcohol, but not BOTH. You can watch a show with a G-string and get bombed, but without the G-string, you will be drinking $7 fruit punch all night. In the City of North Las Vegas and the rest of unincorporated Clark County there is no such restriction.
*I know that several cities here in California have architectural review boards to approve new buildings - Santa Barbara (spanish mission style) and San Dimas (old west style) are two.
*Boca Raton Florida does not allow car dealers within city limits. Also last time I was there the downtown area (along federal highway) was PINK - all the buildings lining the road had to be a certain shade of pink.
*West Palm Beach Florida does not allow car washes within city limits.
*My hometown of Haverhill, Mass. does not allow zoning for trailer parks.
Not exactly a law, maybe, but a few years ago the city council of my former hometown, Johnstown, PA, struck down an application by a local restaurant owner to create an open-air dining terrace downtown. On the grounds it would be a health hazard.
Akron, Ohio was like this too when I lived there, back in high school (10 years ago). Since the nude clubs didn’t sell booze, you only had to be 18 to get it. (No, I never went.) Also, the guy at the strip club I went to for my bachelor’s party (somewhere in Maryland, PG County I think) said it’s topless some nights and other nights all nude and BYOB.
