creating a home wireless network

I’ve just gotten my first ADSL connection, and so I saw it as a great opportunity to get rid of the second phoneline that I was using for dial-up. The result was that neither of my two computers were near a phone outlet.

My solution was to purchase a wireless router/modem and plug it into the phoneline, providing an access point and firewall for both PCs to access the broadband connection through. WEP is enabled. (Note: at this point the wireless network is not ad-hoc.)

Is it possible with this configuration to let the two PCs access shared resources on one another via the router? Currently, this is not the case.

I’m using XP.

Can you get online with both of them (ie can they both access the internet). If you can, then all is well and it’s just a matter of setting up the computer to allow sharing. Unfortunetly this seems to be more difficult with each release of windows. I would walk you through it, but I’ll let someone else do that. It’s the type of thing, were I could do it if I was there, but I couldn’t write it down step for step. No doubt someone will be in here shortly to help out. While we’re waiting, let’s start with a few questions
What OS are you running?
Same on both computers?
Are both computers CURRENTLY able to access the internet?
How comfortable are you with computers (ie if you end up compleatly knocking both computers off the internet all together, will you be able to at least get them back on line to ask more questions? If not, you may want to have someone help out?)
What type of modem/router do you have?
What type wireless adapters do you have?
Anything else you think may be pertinent?

Thanks for the help.

XP Home on both.

Yes.

Very comfortable; networking is my weak area of knowledge/experience.

D-Link DSL-G604T

I have a wireless network with a Mac and a PC running XP.

The Mac works fine. The PC caused me no end of grief.

Do you have Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2? If it’s 2, you may need to change your drivers on the network adapter.
And increase your patience.

Also make sure you don’t have a cordless phone that operates on a 2.4 GHz frequency. That’s the same frequency as your wireless router and you will get interference.

One has SP2, but the oher I’m unsure of – it’s not my PC, and it was purchased only a few months ago.
