I’m in Café Society because I am specifically looking for advice from people personally involved in the Arts/Entertainment business. If you think I’d get more help in a different forum feel free to move me (but I really think this is the best place.)
So, I’m putting together some promotional material for a Comedy/Music event (starring me!). I will be doing a mass mailing to get attention for this event. I need to package the promo material in a way that the recipients can get all the important info without opening the envelope/box/whatever it ends up being.
Inside will be a CD, photos, comp tix, res/bio info, and such like that. But I want the recipient to be able to get all the vital info about the event immediately upon picking up the package.
I have a clear idea in my head of what would work, but the problem is that this is just something I fabricated in my mind- I’ve never actually seen something like this in real life. It would be a sturdy envelope (8 ½ by 11 or so) or a thin box but on the back would be a clear plastic sleeve that I could slide a promo card into. The recipient could see it immediately but could also remove it from the sleeve upon opening the package.
Now I’m sure I’m not the only person ever to need something like this but I haven’t found anything like it in any stationery/office supply/shipping stores. I’ve done searches on the web with phrases like “creative packaging” but haven’t found anything that suits my needs.
Does anyone have any advice? Links would be appreciated. Also, if anyone can suggest a place where I can go in Los Angeles to get something like this that would be wonderful!
Thanks in advance!
How about a DVD case like this?
might be better off in GQ forum, but while its here.
Not sure about being able to remove the promo sheet from a plastic sleeve on the back, especially as your posting them, it sounds a bit expensive/impractical, but you can get printed envelopes done at most design houses.
I’m not sure about the USA, but if they have a version of somewhere like KallKwik or the Colour Co, they have in house designers that can arrange artwork and printing for you, as can most graphic design places.
You’d probably be better off have them print on the front what you want to say, then including an A4 sheet/promo card with a repeat design/info inside the envelope.
As long as you’re not asking for anything extravagant (multiple crazy colours/metallics) etc, shouldn’t be more than a half hour Illustrator job.
try searching on local print/ graphic design houses.
note: this is AFAIK. I work in a slightly different area of graphics/packaging.
hope this is of some help.
Thanks for sharing ideas, Delta-9 and paulberserker
Here’s what I did, it’s a variation on paulberserker’s idea- thanks!
Printing specialty envelopes would have crazy expensive- so says the print-folks. The graphics would have been very elaborate (photos, lots of colors). So I got gigantic stickers made up (8x10). The stickers have the photo and all of the details/promotional info.
Then I gets me some nice big sturdy white cardboard envelopes (photo mailers) onto the backs of which I will adhere the stickers. Postage and address goes on the front. Comp tickets, CD’s, and promotional photos and literature go inside.
It all comes out looking pretty sweet. The recipient gets all the necessary info without even having to open the envelope. And it looks good enough that I’m pretty sure most of the recipients will be interested enough to look inside and come check out the event.
(For Los Angeles area Dopers who may ever need to put this kind of thing together, I used Copymat at Sunset and Wilcox for all the printing- they were also good in terms of consultation, helping me focus my ideas and figuring out what my best options were.)
