Creatives - Do you get the final work you imagined?

Before I touched a computer I experienced dry spells as well as “fugues”, as you say, in my career as an illustrator. I now work almost exclusively on the computer to produce a variety of graphic designs and I still experience the same ups and downs as I did when designing the old-school way. The computer is simply a tool, albeit a different kind of tool, but a tool none-the-less. You still have to get the lump on the end of the log to recreate what is in your head regardless of the tool…

The point about the tool is certainly valid. Anyone who has had to make a correction in airbrush knows that! Using a computer to work has been incredibly freeing but now some of the organicness has been lost. Funny thing, before computers we were all trying to make corners crisp and our work almost machine-tooled, now that we can do that we are looking for ways to make it more organic.

I’ve also wondered if the adage about being better today than I was yesterday doesn’t color my opionions on my work.
