Creepy "ThunderBird Country" Placard in S. Indiana

While driving home from work yesterday in Greene County, Indiana, I noticed very ominous placards in yards alongside the highway. They were the size of your typical front-yard political sign that sticks into the ground. On an orange background with black lettering, it said “Thunderbird Country” and in the middle there was a picture of a very Germany, very Teutonic looking Eagle.

At first, I thought that sign said “Stormfront Country,” and the picture and the message made sense. Now that I’ve determined it says “Thunderbird Country,” I’m confused. It could perhaps be racist or it could also be Native American related, although I don’t think the local area is really known for its Native American lore.

If anyone has any idea what this is about, I’d be appreciative. This is in Greene County, Indiana, between Bloomfield and Bloomington.

Thanks.

My WAG would be a local school sports mascot.

Find out the name of the sports teams at the local high school. Betcha I know what it is.

I’ve seen plenty of signs, usually in school gyms but sometimes on the street, saying “This is Fighting Aardvarks Country” or something similar.

Tear Oh my. I love this place. Now THIS is service!

Yeah, that’s probably it. The local high school team is the Thunderbirds. That never occurred to me. Hmm.

Sorry hicks.

Farmersburg, Indiana.

Hey, hey, hey now!!! That’s just a couple hours up highway 41 from me! “Hicks” indeed!

My mother lived in Farmersburg for a while when she was a little girl.

OK…this is just spooky. I know Elvis is on the other side of the country, but…

I teach at a school whose mascot is the Thunderbird. But because they have never settled on a standardized logo, about 20 years ago I dubbed my Speech & Debate team “The Fighting Aardvarks” in protest. We have a big sign up in the team room and everything.

You’re not a former debater of mine, are you?

Strickly a coinkydink.
