Cricket: Australia tour of India 2017

Longest innings by an Indian batsman, apparently.

India to win, for me, after those quick wickets at the end. One of them was the nightwatchman, Nathan Lyon. A lot depends, as ever, on Steve Smith. If he goes in the first session, I’d put money on an Indian win.

Australia 451 & 204/6 (100.0 ov) P. Handscome 72no, S.Marsh 53, R. Jadeja 4-54
India 603/9d

Match drawn

Test match of the finest quality, in a series ranking right up with the 2005 Ashes, were you to disregard the agro.
Perhaps somebody else could explain to our USAer friends the virtues/merits of a drawn result?

Thanks, I’m aware of that excellent site and use it to follow most of England’s matches, just saying I don’t really have the time to do so for this series and as such I really appreciate the updates here, as well as the insightful comments.

A good batting display by both sides, Australia demonstrating what England should have done last year. Though presumably the pitch here never got really tricky?

And I’d have lost my money!

The pitch was not easy to bat on, but it did present an even contest. And with well over 1,000 runs in the first innings, patently runs could be scored with application.
Significant spin could be extracted and variable spin took most of the wickets.
However it maintained consistent bounce and nobody got fired by a shooter. There were just two LBW dismissals in the game (Hansdscombe in the Aust 1st and Renshaw in the Aust 2nd). There were 13 in Pune and 11 in Bengaluru.

Again, thank you for the detail.

Second day of the fourth (and final?) game.

Australia were 300 all out yesterday, and today India were sitting pretty at 150/2, but they closed at 248/6, and are looking dubious with 2 newish batsmen - they may not even get a lead. One of the slips dropped an absolute sitter (video clip with sound) a few overs from the end which could have really put the pressure on India tomorrow.

Meh, he needs to work on his mindreading skills.

Australia broke today.

India’s tail managed to get to 332, a lead of 32 (even I can do those maths) and then Australia fell over for 137. India finished on 19/0, needing only 87 to win tomorrow. Hard to see them failing to get them.

I would be interested to know the last time that a team was dismissed in their second innings for less than they had scored for 1 wicket down in the first innings.

Yup, they wrapped it up without much fuss. Hard to see any side getting a series win in India for quite a few years. Can India take it forward from here and win an away series against one of the other elite teams (which at the moment are really only Aus, Eng, and SA - possibly NZ).

They’re touring South Africa next Januaryand that’s it. I think South Africa will be the favourites for that one.

It is amazing what sort of stuff you can extract from Cricinfo!
OK, if you restrict the list to second innings of all out for 200 or less, my reckoning is there have been 140 instances of this happening in Test cricket history (out of 2,258 Tests)

The previous time it happened was in Oct-16 Pakistan v West Indies in Dubai when Pakistan were 1/352 in their first innings and bowled out for 123 in their 2nd. (another example of why nobody in their right mind would captain or coach Pakistan)
The lowest score 1 down which the team didn’t beat in their completed second innings was in 1978 New Zealand v England at Lords when NZ was 1-70 in the first innings and all out 67 in the second.

Australia have done it 26 times, the one before Dharamasala was in 2009 in Perth v WIndies when 1/260 was followed up by 150 all out.

The worst Australian example was in 1936 in Brisbane v England when 1/89 in the first innings was followed by all out for 58.
