Cricket World Cup 2011

It’s a wide so wide the wicketkeeper couldn’t take it, and the ball reaches the boundary for four extra runs.

I never had one of those, but only because the widest ball I ever bowled was caught by first slip.

Jas09 - I think it’s a wide that goes to the boundary. You get 4 for it being a boundary plus one for it being a wide. I think! Hopefully someone with a better working application of the laws will be able to provide better idea.

Indeed, Duke beat me to it.

Got it - so you get the boundary runs, plus the wide run, plus it doesn’t count as a delivery in the over. Pretty generous mistake, I’d say.

Yes you are both correct. It is scored as 5 wides.

If it goes over the boundary without touching the ground, is it 7 wides? I’ve never played cricket, so I have no idea if this is even possible.

Raina hits a 6 off the first ball of the batting powerplay and India will do well to lose from here.

Well, from what I’ve seen of the game, it’s not possible.

SIX for India… need 15 from 27 balls now…

Yes but hard to imagine how anyone could do it.

You’d have to intentionally hurl the ball out the field - there’s no way to do it by accident.

Actually the Laws of Cricket state that a ball traveling over the boundary counts for four runs, whether it be thrown or hit or knocked, but a six can only be scored if the ball is “struck by the bat”.

From Law 19:

And now India have only 4 runs to go. Yuvraj is never going to have to pay for a meal in India again.

Bye, bye Aussies… I think the script was against you from the start.

The Aussies have been World ODI champs since 1999. Pretty good reign.

If this is the end for Ponting, what a note to go out on. A gritty, defiant 100 in a World Cup quarter final against the host nation. Someone who saw it rather than listened might be able to say more about his captaincy today but on batting performance, Ponting is not responsible for this defeat.

Pakistan v India for a place in the World Cup Final. That game is going to be enormous. I dare say both countries will be at a standstill.

Pakistan v India Semi Final. Oh Crap.

Fantastic! Wonderful innings from Yuvraj. I didn’t dare to believe in an Indian victory until well near the end. The semi final next week will be a classic, I’m sure. And at least India won’t fold to the Pakistani bowlers quite as easily as the Windies.

And so ends the long reign of Australia as ODI World Champions. Ponting to (almost certainly) go out with a century.

Well done India - you’ve set up the biggest semi-final imaginable.

Tonight’s game fgeels like a bit of anti climax, even though I’m a New Zealander…

No kidding. Any bets as to how much the subcontinent’s GDP is going to drop as a result of this match (and the attendant lack of work being done that day?)

Really, Australia deserved no better. Far too many passengers and they lost to the two decent local teams where a result was achieved.

No idea. I do know this. The day after the match is going to be a day of celebration in one country and mourning in another.

Solid start from NZ - two wickets down, but 80 runs on the board at 4/over…

Good platform being laid - SA need to take a wicket, and pronto!!
