Cricket World Cup 2019

Barstow goes for one too many French cuts.

Yeah, these NZ bowlers are looking ferocious!

Ferguson most surprised person in the ground when he took that one.

Great catch! England losing wickets now at a regular interval. Was this one won at the toss?

Going to the wire!

530am and I’m wide awake.

Super over!

QMFG

Unbelievable! I hope ER’s in England and NZ are well-staffed.

Repetitive strain injuries from flicking between channels (the Wimbledon Men’s Final is currently in a fifth-set tie-break)

This would have been a script rejected by every movie house due to lack of believability. Congrats England!

I don’t believe it.
All the gods wanted England to win and New Zealand just couldn’t stay ahead of them

Damn that was exciting.

I have literally been repeating this over and over for the last hour. Wine may be a factor. England were fortunate but my goodness what an amazing finish. Stokes England’s man of the tournament with honourable mentions to Jason Roy, Bairstow, and Woakes.

Had the privilege of watching the final with a cousin who was born in 2009. I believe it’s the first World Cup won by a British professional sports team in his lifetime (in fact I suspect the RWC 2003 was the last such occasion) - can anyone confirm if this is the case?

I think I may have reached peak sport.

The British F1 GP, Federer-Djokovic final, and this! I was hoping for 3/3 but Djokovic spoiled that one a bit (But what a hell of a game!).

The match overall was brilliant, one for the bowlers and both teams kept it incredibly tight, absolutely nothing to chose between the two and a super-over was fitting. It thought when we lost the toss that may have been it. No-one has chased on this pitch and won so the omens were not great.
I have to say I thought it was a massive call to bring in Archer at the death and I’m not sure, even though we won, that it was the right call. Glad he walks away with a win from that though.

Cricket…bloody hell!

England won the T20 World Cup in the West Indies in 2010, beating the Australians in the final. Also, the England Women won their ODI cup in 2017 at Lords, beating India by 9 runs.
What a game, eh? Well played Stokes, burying some demons from the last tournament final he was involved in, when he failed to defend 22(?) against the WI and Carlos Brathwaite. Absolutely drained now, and I’ve had a beer or two this afternoon, but I’m still buzzing. The tight games are great to win, and absolutely gutting to lose - my heart goes out to Kane and the NZ team and supporters. Especially those that have to go to work now.

Indeed. I was well aware of the women’s cricket successes and meant to add “men’s” as a qualifier, not that I wish to denigrate their amazing achievement, thanks for the reminder. And I had forgotten/discounted the T20 - I’d say that was roughly on a par with, say, GB men winning Olympic gold at football. This is much bigger.

Hard to imagine a more unlucky way to lose, especially that four overthrows off Stokes’ bat diving for the crease. And Boult will regret missing that opportunity to throw the ball away before stepping on the rope for a long time, seemed he had ages to do it and just didn’t realise. Amazing fielding from both teams at the end of their super overs under the most pressure imaginable. Great advert for the game etc. Roll on the Ashes!

Kinda wishing Ben Stokes had been banned to be honest.

I wrote this a few days ago - and I still stand by it. You can’t decide a game by ‘how’ a team scores or plays during the game. You decide it on the scoreboard.

Mind you, it also seems likely that the umps ruled incorrec tly on the ‘4 overthrows + 2 runs’. Should have only been 5 not 6. https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/27191816/should-england-got-five-not-six-overthrows
