Crippled Dog Update

I mentioned a while back in some dog-related thread that one of The Killer Elite developed IVDD http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Health/Intervertebral-Disk-Disease/Symptoms.aspx and we were going to give it a go at rehabilitation.

This went down in November, and we weren’t sure if Ol’ Doxie was going to be around come Christmas. He was paralyzed in his rear legs, lost control of bowels and bladder and was starting to go downhill pretty fast. We were real afraid things would snowball and we’d have to do the unthinkable.

Wife did the research, and we put him in a box for 8 weeks, had to carry him outside, hold him to do “his business” 3 or 4 times a day, rain or snow. Blah, blah, blah…

I’m happy to report this Hero is back on his feet! He’s earned a couple new nick-names. “Christopher Walken” and “Walker, Texas Ranger”. I ask him if he wants to hear some Patsy Cline. (He says, I’m Crazy!)

He’s not 100%, but he is doing his best. He staggers around a little, like he’s been drinking, and when he tries to chase the other dogs around, he drags sometimes. But, he’s improving a little every day and hopefully will be around for many more years. Most importantly, he seems real happy to be somewhat independent again. He’s riding in the Jeep with the other dogs, just like the good old days.

I’m posting this because I put him out today, in the wind, mist and coming snow, and I look out the window and he’s hopping around, tail wagging and just looked so happy. Made my day! My wife deserves most of the credit (it’s her dog) but I did an awful lot of late-night potty calls, too.

Picture of him recovering in a box. I’ll try to get a short vid of him on his feet looking jaunty soon…

Oh, good job, you guys!

This guy is a force of nature. Can’t keep him down. He recovered after being run over and broken like a cheap vase.

A real good dog.

Happiest news I’ve heard all day, that’s fantastic!

Woo-hoo! Go Doxie! You made my day!

:skritches to the Killer Elite:

That is seriously awesome news.

I’m so glad you gave him a chance!

Well done.

I was gonna make a joke about all that beer for a four-pack of Wieners, but…

I’m glad your pack is intact. Dogs are resilient.

Could you share some more information on the box method for helping dachshunds with this problem? I’ve known a few dogs now who had this issue, and would like to know more about this option. Thank you.

Fantastic story, awesome dog, terrific humans.

I gotta tell you tho, I’m looking at your pics thinking “this has to be Nevada” and then I saw the Wabuska sign and I was like, yep, Nevada.

I love this state.

I am so happy for Doxie, buy your wife a dinner for that awesome nursing care.
Who’s a good boy?

Well, my wife did the research. I’ll try to find out what website. She also joined some kind of “message board” and swapped info with other folks with dogs with the condition. Got some good advice there (and some gut-busting horror stories*).

But, basically, box that sucker up and don’t let him move around. Pick them up to go potty and so forth. Really, just don’t let them move around and aggravate the condition. He was also on some kind of steroid to reduce the swelling in the disc. Frequent trips to the vet for evaluation. Vet was a champ, and assured us he was on track to a recovery.

Hard to keep this guy immobile. He is the Avatar of ‘Go-Dog’.

*An example. One person had a beautiful little female, looked just like my Trixie. Young and otherwise healthy. They tried, and gave up after only a few days, and had her put down. :frowning:

I’m really happy for all of you. I’m going to look it up.

That is so great! I’m so glad that all the effort resulted in a good outcome for your cute friend there. I hope he continues to do really well!

I missed the original thread, but I’m so glad he’s recovering! What a cutie.

There actually wasn’t an original thread. :o

Oh this brightens my day! I love a happy ending, sniff.

I do believe the proper term is “dog with a disability”. C’mon, you put the animal first, injury second.

Do you really expect Gato to be all P.C. and shit?

(You know I kid, don’t you?)

Until I upload the real footage, enjoy this:
