Critique the design of the U.S. flag

There’s a difference between a brand new national flag and a new nation adopting the very symbols of the people you’ve been hating for generations. There’s a bigger picture involved.

Of course not, all his life, the wind always blew from his left side.

He musta growed up in one of them librul cities.

Of course, “backwards”. Look, this is a conceptual thing, so it’s entirely possible you don’t see it the same way I do. I’m saying that to me, growing up, I was taught “this is where the star field goes”, and so I’m conditioned to want to see the flag oriented that way.

Same way when I see a flag hanging properly with the “pole” at the top and the flag vertical, it’s actually the “back” of the flag that is displayed outwards. It looks wrong to me. Sure, the star field is in the upper left, but as I said, that puts the “front” of the flag to the wall. That’s just awkward to me. YMMV.

But you know what the problem with this is? The fact that stripes and stars are individually recognizable as AMERICAN means that designers keep trying to incorporate it into clothing. It looks terrible but everyone keeps doing it.

It’s cluttered and awkward enough on a flag. Don’t do it on PANTS!

Unless you’re planning to roundhouse kick someone to the face.

I always wondered whatever happened to the rule “Don’t wear the flag as clothing” went.

As for my opinion: I like it. I like that you have to know something about it to draw it. The only problem I have is how dadblasted hard it is to draw on white paper. You can’t just draw a pentagram like you could if the stars were any other color.

What do you mean by “rule”? Smith v. Goguen (1972) struck down a Massachusetts law used to prosecute a kid who wore a flag on his pants.

The US Flag Code

Relevant snippets from section 176:
§176. Respect for flag

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
[ul]
li The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.[/li]li The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.[/li]li The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.[/li]li The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.[/li]li The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.[/li]li No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart. [/li][/quote]

[/ul]The Flag Code spells out behaviors for respectful treatment of the flag, but because no penalties exist it does not have any force of law. So people can do whatever they want without regard to this law.

However, there may be other state laws that do carry penalties.

The way I read item (d), it applies to the flag as a whole, as an item, so using colors and designs from the flag is okay as long as it isn’t the flag itself. Item (j) could be interpreted to affect the use of motifs of the flag. But that gets interpretational - is a blue field with white stars the flag, or just a motif? It is acceptable to use blue white and red bunting, the colors of the flag, as decorations. Mixing the colors on clothing is acceptable if not in flag patterns. So where is the line?

Note item (i) and how frequently that is ignored for patriotic events like Fourth of July celebrations. Regardless of the code, people’s perceptions are that they are being patriotic by decorating with the flag, and that it is not being disrespectful to have a flag-decorated napkin to wipe your mouth with. YMMV.

All such laws were struck down as unconstitutional infringements on First Amendment rights in Texas v. Johnson (1989).
