Crock Pot: 1/2 Low 1/2 High-- Answer Needed Slow

Straight up—If I have a crock pot (slow-cooker) recipe that states: cook for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low, can I cook it for 4 hours on low and then 2 hours on high?

7 hours on low and 1/2 an hour on high?

4 hours on low and 2 hours on high?

Maybe most importantly; 6 hours on low, 1 hour on high?

I have always assumed that 1/2 hour on high and 7 hours on low would NOT work, since the beast takes a while to heat up. But is there any rhyme or reason to changing settings mid-crock?

I do it all the time. Except I start out on high (to get things going) and then go to low.
Also, if you have a newer crock pot (like say the past ten years or so) they tend to cook warm anyway. So the time is going to vary greatly from CP to CP.

IMO, crock pot cooking is all about making judgement calls for yourself. I wouldn’t rely to heavily (WRT time) on the recipe.

But you can’t lift the lid!!!

Oh nonsense SiXSwordS! Don’t be such a conformist! Be the Rebel and lift that lid! You’ll see, it’s quite liberating!

A rough rule of thumb is that for every 15F increase in temperature, cooking time halves. Measure the temperature inside your cooker and figure it out from there.
