Crock pot apple butter recipe.

Anybody have a tried and true recipe for making apple butter in a slow cooker? One your family has used for generations, maybe? (The recipe, not the crock pot.)
Thanks,
mangeorge

Just as information, I have seen some crockpot apple butter recipes out there that involve a couple of large jars of apple sauce, the usual suspects: brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove (sometimes ginger.)- in proportional amounts for a long and slow cook. You can even enrich it with a few cubes of sweet cream butter if you are using immediately or just frish refrigerating.

Recipe? Peel and core apples, place in crockpot set to any setting other than “off.” Wait.

Very funny.

Any apple butter recipe will cook up in a crock pot just fine. If there’s one you like (or just like the sound of) that’s written for stovetop or oven, toss it in the crock instead.

And throw in a half-cup of bourbon. Bourbon makes cooked apples super awesome.

I wasn’t being funny. That’s all you have to do. It’s practically impossible not to make apple butter when you start with apples, heat, and time.

I guess I could add:
stir occaisionally
adjust seasonings with cinnamon and ginger once desired texture is achieved.

What’s the difference between apple butter and applesauce, then? Just the amount of time you cook it?

Yup.

My wife and I went to an apple orchard a few weeks ago, and used about half the apples we picked to make apple butter. I used a recipe she’d found online which turned out fantastic. Basically, it’s as Hello Again said. I peeled and cored the apples, put them in a Crockpot until they were slightly mushier than fried apples, and then mashed them with a potato masher. Eventually, they started to look like apple butter, at which point I seasoned them to taste (Cinnamon, allspice and clove), and pureed with an immersion blender (a regular blender can be used, but obviously it’s more tedious). A little brown sugar may be called for, depending on what type of apples you use in the first place. Ours were sweet enough that they didn’t need any.

For what it’s worth, I started out with about 7 quarts of apples, which cooked down to about 1.5-2 quarts of apple butter.

My wife says some Facebook group called Crockpot girls or something like that has a good recipe for apple butter.
