I imagine them as having a stereotypical sort of deep-voiced idiot accent, but that’s only based on the fact that they say things like “That not right,” and refer to zebras as “zeebas.”
Well, they’re not supposed to have a recognizable foreign accent- they’re just supposed to sound like stupid, barely literate animals that aren’t capable of deep thought, or ANY thought beyond their next meal.
Their communication skills are somewhere between the Frankenstein monster and the Cookie Monster.
When I read the croc dialogue, I normally think of stereotypical “caveman” speech. (Think Captain Caveman, or even Grimlock from the Transformers.)
Well, I would make a croc sound Australian, because Australia has crocodiles. “Crocodile” Dundee and all that.
But the cartoonist of Pearls Before Swine seems to be going for French.
The cartoonist’s e-mail address is theratandpig@aol.com. You should ask him! I bet he’d respond; last month, when I e-mailed him to tell him about a misspelling, he responded.
I have to bring this thread back from the dead because we have an answer: according to Stephan Pastis in a St. Petersburg Times article, the crocodiles’ accent is a cross between a stereotypical Russian officer and Tarzan.
