Crooked Numbers

Here’s a question for all you baseball fans out there. Does anyone recall hearing the expression “crooked numbers” before this year? Apparently there is now a rule that radio and tv broadcasters describing a baseball game must use it at least once each game.

you mean for numbers other than 1? As in “they need to put up a crooked number this inning to get back into it” ?

I’ve heard that for ages. Can’t tell you how long, though.

The phrase “crooked numbers” to indicate scoring more than one run in an inning is quite old. Could it be that you’re just watching White Sox games this year for the first time?

The Dickson Baseball Dictionary doesn’t have a date of first use however.
