Cross-Dressing Students Get Own Bathrooms at Rural Thai School

Story here.

So let’s see the tally so far for Thailand: Transvestites can serve in the military, are banned from medical school and are beginning to have their own toilets.

So…is it just me, or does Thailand seem to have a higher-than-normal amount of transsexuals and transvestites? Or is it just that its gets more news stories about them because they seem to be (on the whole) more accepting?

Both, I’d say. Walk through the cosmetics section of any Bangkok department store, and they’re well represented behind the counter. I’m not up on what it’s like in the West these days, but I don’t remember it like that there. And on the street, too, and in other industries, Thailand seems to have more proportionately. But Thailand is also more accepting of them, although they still have plenty of stories of discrimination. And letting them into the military has been a controversial decision.

Why can’t they go to medical school? That seems oddly random.

See my thread on that subject here.
