I was just introduced to CrossWalk America and its parent organization No Longer Silent: Clergy for Justice (On a UU mailing list, of all places). I was wondering what other Dopers thought - good idea? Useful idea? Will it have an impact on bringing liberal Christian beliefs into the eye of the mainstream?
While I agree with the fact that the public face of some Christians today bears little resemblance to the historic faith of our ancestors, this organization would not help that problem. It seems to me as if this organization explicitly seeks liberal goals and finds Biblical justification for them.
The answer to a politicized faith is not politics in the other direction.
As full disclosure here, I am a Catholic. Our church isn’t afraid to take stances on political subjects, of course. Yet these stances don’t dovetail neatly with a left or right political orientation, and are based, rightly or wrongly, on our notions of justice.
That should be the approach.
What it all boils down to, I guess, is what you consider more important, the fleeting temporal political issues of the day, or an enduring and lasting faith.
You’ll have to answer for yourself what the more important half of the phrase “liberal Christian” is.
