crowd noise

Im watching the baseball playoffs and hearing loud cheering.
Except for the whistling and clapping, what sounds are the individual fans mostly making to produce the crowd noise?

Like the sound comedians make imitating loud cheering.

woooooooo

Slightly related but not really. I read in a trivia book when I was a kid that movie directors used to simulate crowd noise in a room by getting six or seven actors to repeat “Rhubarb” over and over again in no particular relation to one another. I have no idea if it is true though.

Not sure if that is related to the trick to look like you are having a conversation, when you are not the focus of the scene. We used to use “peas and carrots” said over and over. I had heard some actors used “rhubarb” for the same effect.

In acting, I’ve been instructed to repeat “soda water bottle” as well.

As for real crowds, The constant, sustained noise of the crowd is, I suspect, simply low conversational murmuring multiplied by 30,000. Witness after a run scored by the home team, after the initial screams and cheers susside, the constant murmur is noticably louder than before, due to more people talking excitedly.

By the way, Go Giants!

another question about crowd noise here. why is it that the noise of, say, a baseball crowd is so loud. surely it should only be as loud as the loudest person, if you see what i mean.
