Crowd volumes on sports broadcasts

The background crowd volume on live sports broadcasts is invariably louder during playoff or championship games, which makes sense since arenas are full and fans are more vocal than during regular season games. But isn’t what we hear at home really controlled by the broadcasters? Don’t they need to calibrate the noise levels for broadcasts anyway? Are we really hearing the loud, tense crowd in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, or what the networks just want us to hear?

I have noticed that during English Premier League games, announcers describe the deafening noise levels in a stadium, except that it just sounds like a normal game crowd when watching at home.
