<cynical rant>
Because we (who have been trained to value ourselves by some arbitrary standard of looks, and by the amount of money we have, rather than by our good works and healthy relationships (if any)) can lift our eyes from our pointless debt-ridden lower-middle-class lives and temporarily feel superior to those who throw away more money and better looks than we will ever have a hope of acquiring…

Okej, I know that the Hollywood life can royally screw up people, so it’s no wonder that so many marriages break, but still… that rant is what goes through my head avery time I see the tabloids at the checkout stand when I go to buy food.
Hollywood marriages are usually career marriages. They take two people who can boost each other’s careers & pair them until both get what they need from it. Simple. It’s been the formula for a long long time.
Another Hollywood marriage that still seems solid, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (though she doesn’t act much anymore.) I was happy I saw her on a rerun of MASH the other night though
I read on MSNBC’s “Scoop” that Kidman is less of a L Ron follower than Cruise. In the story, she claims she’s more of a Catholic than a Scientoligist*. Is Cruise that stupid to let the ravings of a madman break up a marrage?
Probably.
*[sub]That’s probably not even close to the spelling, but heck, I don’t care.[/sub]
I agree that movie’s a masterpiece - so photographic, rich in duality, subtle but beautiful hidden meanings, etc… I’ll have to watch it again sometime.
A bad headline juxtaposition day for Mr. Cruise yesterday. Pretty much all the UK papers had a big picture of Tom and Nicole on the front page (story further back in the paper) next to their lead story, which led to some amusing match-ups.
I thought the Glasgow Herald’s headline “Man admits 25-year pattern of abuse” was bad enough, until I saw the Daily Express’s bold-faced leader: BEHEAD HIM!. (I mean, he’s not that bad an actor). It turns out the story was about a man accused of murder in Saudi Arabia, but never mind…
On the longevity scale, don’t forget Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows…
… but splitting because of career demands?? C’mon - you split up because of infidelity or abuse or some other heinous reason, not because “It’s too hard to make it work…” Why marry in the first place if it’s not to be a lifetime committment?
<assumes geezer posture, grumbling about this younger generation, tsk-tsking loudly>
[hijack] Thank you big_yellow_kingswood, I laughed out loud.
But I suspect Tim was sincere. For all you non-Aussies, Tim Fischer, while an individual’s individual*, has integrity+. (And I’m from waaaay the other side of the political fence.) Ya gotta respect him. He gave up being Deputy Prime Minister to spend more time with his family, particularly his son, after the child was diagnosed as autistic, citing non-family-friendly parliament hours and travel as reasons. [Returning you to your expected country, /hijack]
*+From memory, he appeared on the cover of a broadsheet supplementary magazine (which featured an article on him, including his love for bushwalking and the high country), lying in a mountain stream, effectively starkers apart from a strategically positioned Akubra. I tell 'ya, we get a better grade of pollie here!
