Apologies. I based my new word on DSINOSAUR instead of ORDAIN. Use this instead.

Resident in vessel (6)

Hint: Double meanings

I still got nothing after spending much of the morning sifting through synonyms. If there is a particular vessel named mate or tern, I cannot find it.

I thought of intern but dismissed it. A nitpick reason is that resident and intern are two different things: First year out of medical school you’re an intern, after that, and until you’re done training, you’re a resident. That aside, how does “tern” relate?

I admit it’s a stretch, but “tern” is an archaic word for “drinking vessel.”

Not a double definition clue, though. It’s a charade clue. Double definition means the same word or phrase is defined by both parts of the clue. “IN TERN” is not the same as “INTERN”.

Also, can you cite where TERN means drinking vessel? A brief googling turned (pun intended) up nothing.

OK fine. The clue sucked. We’ve moved on.

That is correct.
