Cryptic overlaps

Ardent?

I want to guess “DIREST,” but I can’t parse it to the clue, so I’m not going to.

Suppose we could get a hint? We appear to be stumped.

Correct - apologies, I missed this as I didn’t get a notification. Start with argent (silver), replace God (g) with (old English) pennies (d) to get “wanted most urgently”.

Just want to give a shout-out to this month’s Harper’s cryptic puzzle “Sixes and Sevens (and Twelves).” Harper’s is still a fine read in this time of disappearing magazines – and the cryptic puzzle itself is worth the cost of the publication.

Carry on.

I’m a fan of those Harper’s puzzles. They can be a challenge. There’s often a theme, and it’s not always a walk in the park to guess what the theme is. But once you do, bam! it’s a big boost.

No help needed on this, right?
