SONGBIRD (swap the two halves of Sebastian Faulks BIRDSONG).

Repetitive, repetitive sound of spring without bees, once I left. (7).

Sorry, I’m stuck on this one - my best guess is droning, but can’t see how it works (i.e. it doesn’t).

In the meantime, may I interrupt the regularly scheduled thread with the following clue? No overlaps, but the fourth letter of the answer is A:

Calm, losing head, aka mixing lad with fellow for winner? (6)

Yeah,I may have over cooked this one.

ONGOING, I e. Repetitive.

I meant to add - this is intended as a highly topical homage to something the NYT has done once or twice in the past, so it’s not quite a normal clue.

Thanks, I got it after hint 2. Part of the problem was it overlaps with ‘birdsong’ instead of the actual previous answer ‘songbird’ - might have worked fine otherwise! I like the ‘spring’ misdirection, didn’t think of that until your hint. Just shows that I rely too much on helping letters.

The game can continue on from my clue above. If you can’t get that one, try this excellent site that you probably already know about, but I only found recently: https://www.minutecryptic.com/

Gah! What a waste of everyone’s time, sorry folks.

Agree. Nice puzzle, very clever but wrong overlap. Been there done that!

So what’s the active puzzle?

Try this one? It’s topical…

See above for a hint. Also, I should have said that in addition to the fourth letter being A, the fifth letter is L.
