Who sings it? I just heard it on my local rock station (Portland, Oregon’s KUFO) and my ears are bleeding.
I wish to know the name of the band so that I can curse them to hell and back but can’t seem to find anything on Google as a search on the lyrics obviously brings up 17,334,644 Pink Floyd links and not much else.
Korn would also be my guess. Their version also splices in a few bits of other songs from The Wall. I don’t see much point in what they did with the material, it drones too much for my taste.
Have you ever heard Disturbed’s Down With the Sickness? If not, you must listen to it posthaste. It’s the perfect example of that name. (and I like it.)
And Mississippienne: God can only forgive so much.
That is a good name for it – I’ve been calling it screamcore, because in the late 80’s when the metal and hardcore crossover bands were first coming about that is the only name that seemed to suit, but growling monkey music sounds like a better name - I don’t mind some harder music, in fact I love punk & hardcore, but quite a bit of the music of that genre seems to be just screaming contests.
Anyway Luther Wright and The Wrongs - have a listen if you want to find out what bluegrass Pink Floyd songs are like - the music is so unlike every other cover I have ever heard of a Pink Floyd song!
Hey, don’t pick on KoRn! clutches Jonathan Davis plushie protectively
They’ve been around since what, '92? Say what you will, but they worked their way up from the bottom. They’ve definitely got staying power, and they’re good at what they do. KoRn is like the Rodney Dangerfield of the metal scene: they get no respect. It’s sort of in vogue to diss on them, and even cheap imitation bands who owe every ounce of their style to KoRn will rip on them.
One thing I love about KoRn: they treat their fans with a lot of respect. They chose 4 fan-made designs for the cover of one of their albums, they spoke up when a boy was threatened with expulsion for wearing a KoRn t-shirt to school. Also, I love Jonathan Davis’ raw, expressive vocals. In their song “Did My Time” (probably my favorite) his voice just soars up in this amazing, yes even beautiful, way. He can go from crushingly apocalyptic to bemusement (“ADIDAS”). And “Daddy” is still the only song that has ever scared the sh!t out of me.
I don’t like this nu-metal label. KoRn’s been around 15 years, are they really that new? They’re not likely to fade away any time soon. Besides, people always use “nu-metal” as a disparaging label. I don’t see why I can’t love KoRn and also love Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, any number of older bands. It’s not a competition for me, I guess.
If you want to hear screamcore, there’s a lot of new thrash-metal bands in which the singer just makes barking, growling noises. At least you can understand what Davis is saying. Oh, and I love Disturbed, too. Draiman has one of the most unique voices I’ve heard in a while.
For what it’s worth, my musical tastes include lots of nu-metal and I don’t use the term the least bit disparagingly. I have no problem with angst and the emotion that a lot of people mock the genre for… I just don’t care for KoRn. At all.
And now they went and covered a song I love by a band I like in general. Not a big deal, really… after all, I give most things multiple tries before dismissing it as something I don’t like – Ben Stiller, for example, is good at drama but I will kill anyone that tries to make me watch one of his comedies – but when I hate the cover and it’s by a band I generally dislike? It adds up after a while.
Besides, my earlier mocking was said mostly tongue in cheek. I save my true musical rage for Audioslave and Soundgarden. There’s a story behind that though.
