I’m pretty sure it won’t be The OP seems to be particularly…touchy about moderation of this board in general, and, if I remember correctly, against Czarcasm in particular.
Thank the gods there wasn’t a poll in that thread.
Seriously, though, I too don’t see the problem with heated discussion in IMHO.
I’m the mod referred to above who participated in an alcoholism thread as both a poster and a mod, though in completely separate posts. This led to an enormous uproar at that time, and I have recused myself from *all *alcoholism threads since then.
That said – generally the alcoholism threads end up being a referendum on AA, and the ensuing vociferous criticism of AA is generally based on the fact that it is a spiritually based fellowship. Supporters thus end up involved in what can fairly be described as “religious debates” and “witnessing,” making it GD-worthy. In addition, I would argue that those who have dealt with alcoholism, their own or that of their loved ones, regardless of their feelings about AA, would object to dismissing it as a “less than cosmic” issue.
I have not discussed this particular thread with Czarcasm, but it has been general board policy for a while now to move alcoholism threads to GD for these reasons – this is not some idiosyncratic or policy-setting move on his part.
Please note that I am not talking about my own opinions on any of the issues around AA or alcoholism here, merely describing the general mod policy that provides what I understand to be the context of the thread move.
twickster, moderator of neither IMHO nor GD
To me, the huge difference between GD and IMHO is the appropriateness of anecdotal evidence: in GD it’s almost threadshitting: it’s a hijack, because people aren’t there to discuss any one person’s life, they want to discuss the bigger issue. In IMHO anecdotal evidence is considered a valid contribution to a thread.
The OP in this thread seemed to want anecdotes.
Nor do I. It seems the place is run by nuns who are afraid people might have a little fun if they’re not careful. Quoth Darth Panda: frank exchanges of views seems to be code for stfu lately. Yep. Seriously, it’s a message board let folks message.
At least ease up on the reins.
That’s not true - lots of religious threads are nothing but invitations for personal anecdotes - all the ones that start “Believers, why do you…” or “Atheists, for what reasons do you…” etc. And witnessing in general is anecdotal.
Oh, that’s what BigT is referring to. I agree with your description of the factors that lead alcoholism to GD.
In my experience, Great Debates probably leads to alcoholism.

It’s certainly more enjoyable after a few cans of strong Polish lager.
