This is my plan if they ask at a young enough age that subtlety will be lost. Otherwise, it will probably be some version of “some people believe, some people don’t.”
NOBODY really knows if there is a God or not.
but EVERYBODY either believes in God or they don’t.
Listen to people who believe and listen to people who don’t believe.
Don’t listen to anyone who claims they know.
Once, long time ago when a caveman saw natural events - thunder lightning or felt an earthquake or saw a falling star or did not understand what is the Moon doing up on the night sky – caveman could not understand how it happens and could not fall asleep. So after many sleepless nights caveman was so tired that the idea came to him that there must be something up there in the sky that does all those things – a God. Then the caveman fell asleep. Ever since then science has been explaining why these natural events happen so ever since then less and less people believe that there is a God.
//** He has an interesting set of science books that explain in very simple terms how does lightning occur, earthquake, what falling star really is, and how Moon was created so I counted on that. His response was – “Good thing we’re not cave people.”
NOBODY really knows if there is a Tooth Fairy or not.
but EVERYBODY either believes in the Tooth Fairy or they don’t.
Listen to people who believe and listen to people who don’t believe.
Don’t listen to anyone who claims they know
M^3, you don’t listen to anyone who claims to know that there isn’t a Tooth Fairy? How’s that working out for you? How about people who claim to know that we really did land people on the moon back in 1969? Or those who claim that we stick to the ground because of gravity?
Our kids never asked because we’ve been teaching them about God since they were born. I know we’re an outlier in the context of the Straight Dope, though.
The problem with the “some people believe he does and believe he doesn’t approach” is that the believers are a lot more vocal than the nonbelievers - the real world being a lot different from the SDMB. My kids were that age before the New Atheism, so it was even worse. If you don’t believe it is important to role model, since no one who isn’t deaf dumb and blind is going to be unaware of the believers out there.
The “yes” of the believers is unlikely to come with the standard proofs, so a “no” by an unbeliever can be just as unequivocal until a kid is old enough to get the reasons.
Ok, we get it. You don’t believe in god. The question in the OP does not mention a tooth fairy. The OP asks about god. MMM would say yes. You know darn well that MMM would approach the tooth fairy, bigfoot and the monster under my bed a little differently than god.
Oops! Guess you don’t get it. Since I don’t consider mysefl an Athiest nor Agnostic at all.
A poster made a point using the tooth fairy. MMM responded as if she hadn’t made her point. So I asked if he would respond the same to both questions. Just a bit of back and forth in an opinion thread.
Agnosticism is merely theistic special pleading. It begins with the assumption that gods are subject to different standards of evidence than other hypothetical entities. Why this double standard is justified is never explained.
