Daddy Dopers with Daughters

Your daughter announces she’s getting married. (No, mine isn’t this is hypothetical)

Or, alternately, if you have married off a daughter. You have that first dance with her at the wedding, right after the ungrateful, barely worthy slob she married.

What song is that dance happening to? If it’s entirely up to you, I mean?

Weird thing is, I’ve known the answer to this since my daughter was a crawler. It’s Sunrise-Sunset, from Fiddler on the Roof. This just came to mind the other day when I heard the Jill Sobule version of it on XM, and stood there just getting a little, um…ok, weepy thinking about it.

So, share. What did, or would you dance to at that moment?

No daughters, just $0.02.

My wife has eight female cousins and her Aunt has sung Sunrise/Sunset at every one of the cousins’ weddings so far (including ours). We generally try and schedule this somewhat towards the beginning because there isn’t a dry eye in the house when she’s done.

Since my dad doesn’t post to the Dope or even know that it exists…

I danced with my dad to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” He told me later that is what he would have picked… I never knew dad was such a sentimental fool

Most likely Elvis Costello’s Alison, since that was what I named her after.

:dubious:

My dad’s song with me will be “In My Life” by The Beatles. He’s always said it was his favorite song and I think it fits perfectly as a father-daughter dance.

That or “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder. The two songs that play in every daddy’s head when he thinks about his little girl.

Having grown up with a Dylan Freak dad, and having listened to Dylan all her life, I hope when my little girl (early 20s) decides to get married we dance to His Bobness singing “Forever Young”…

I’m thinking Ivylad should dance (as best he can, he uses a walker) Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion when Ivygirl gets married.

In the far future day, I would probably want Guinnevere by CSN. That was the inspiration for her name. I love the song, but it will be a little odd to dance to.

I really like Sunrise-Sunset, I like Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” even better. I will probably stick to Guinnevere though.

::sniff sniff:: dab

My dance with my oldest daughter had better be to “Maria” from West Side Story, from whence she was named.

Funky Cold Medina

What?

Ok, seriously, it won’t matter. Whatever song she likes. I can think of a bunch, and I’m sure I’m overlooking a bunch.

Well, I’m not a Daddy Doper (yet) and it’s a boy, not a girl, but Mrs. Small picked some country song to dance to at our wedding for the dance with her father. I don’t know the name of it off hand, but I remember it. Wasn’t one I particularly cared for, but she enjoyed it.

I think it was that “I loved her first” song. I also think they picked it because they weren’t sure what song would be good and her dad really likes that one.

Two small girls on this end. Two and Seven now.

I certainly hope it’s nothing yet released. Something with some balls to it.

Is there a Chuck Brown fan in the house?

I have a precious 2 year old daughter,. I don’t want to think about her being grown up, getting married, how old I’ll be then, or any of that. Asking me what song we should dance to at her wedding is like asking me in what color coffin I wish to be buried.

OK, I exaggerate a little, but since that day’s probably 20+ years away, I have no clue. It’ll be her choice, anyway.

We might be living in a world where we wish such things were our only concern. My greatest hope is that it will still be a happy time for us and the world hasn’t turned into some post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-type nightmare.

Damned if I know. I’m having trouble thinking past this summer’s camp.

How about The 1812 Overture?

You can’t accuse it of being a sentimental choice. And it’ll cement my reputation as an eccentric.

My daughter is a bit of a metalhead - so some Iron Maiden maybe

Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter springs to mind.

Maybe not.
I’m not thinking about this for a long time, and nor is she

Si

Damn right, and any thug bastard that dares lay a hand on my daughter will be pulling back a stub!

Reminds me, I need to have a talk with my daughter…I know, she’s only 2, but it’s never too early to teach vigilance. She needs to know that anything a boy says or does in her presence is patently designed for one thing, and one thing only, and it’s evil, evil, I tell you. Don’t ask me how I know this.
