And from that day on you were known as “pullin”.
Touche.
I originally chose my name based on trailering and stuff. But I guess that applies.
Speaking as one of the few religious conservatives in the SDMB and the father of a 13 year old boy…
My philosophy has always been, “Whenever he’s old enough to ask a question, he’s old enough to get an accurate answer.” If anything, I’ve often told my son more than he really wanted to know.
I actually feel like it’s important to sometimes not explain things, and for kids to know that’s okay. For one thing, I’m entitled to my privacy and no one–not even my kid–is entitled to know everything about me. Second, there are times and places where the only alternative to “I’m not going to tell you” is to lie. And I really don’t like to lie. So my son knows that every once in a while, I’m just not going to tell him and he needs to trust me that that is okay.
Count me in as someone who never thought of gangbang being rape at all. Always consensual, and synonymous with pulling a train.
I don’t have any kids of my own, but I have been asked questions by kids. My philosophy is to always answer accurately, but to only give as many details as are asked for. If “It’s a grown-up thing” satisfies the kid, then that’s their answer. If they still ask for more details after that, then I take that as evidence that they’re ready for more details (incrementally).
I can’t speak for Miami English, but “gangbanger,” generally refers to one who is in a street gang.(And I would think that is the predominant usage in Miami, too.) I’ve never heard this word used in the sexual sense, only the urban street gang sense. “To gang bang” can go either way, depending on context. In my area, when you talk about people gangbanging, it means doing gangbanger things, like selling drugs, stealing, hanging out in groups to intimidate rival gangs, etc. That word does occasionally get used in the sexual sense, but not very often, as there’s a lot of gangbangers here, but not a lot of gangbangs. Also, the sexual sense of the term does not necessarily connote rape. Now that I think about it, it’s just the noun “gangbang” that gets used in the sexual sense.
I meant that it’s the noun “gangbang” that I hear used only in a sexual sense. The verb forms of the word I pretty much only hear in the street gang sense, and “gangbanger” exclusively in that sense.
This thread reminds me of a skit Bill Engvall did, especially the part about his son and the crosswalk sign. Somewhat NSFW.

Interesting, thanks. So what do you do when you find kids playing doctor? Has this happened to anyone here? Did anyone do this when they were young themselves?
"Daddy, what’s “erectile dysfunction”? (Ans: “Ask your mother.”)
Question asked by millions of children watching the Super Bowl, by children completely unfazed by the famous “Wardrobe Malfunction” that required congressional action to repair
My gym was running a breast cancer campaign that included women’s tops that said, “Support Motor boating.” As I was walking in one day, a lady with her 7-8 year old was going the other way. Just as I passed the boy asked, “Mommy, what’s motor boating?” I wish I had slowed down a little to hear the answer.
Huh huh, you said “insert.”
I probably first heard the term “gangbang” around 1980, when I was a teenager, and it was, as you note, in a sexual sense. My understanding of the term, back then, didn’t necessarily imply rape.
It was in the late 1980s or early 1990s, after I’d moved to Chicago, when I first heard “gangbanger / gangbanging” in the context of gang activity. I suspect that the term has now become so tightly related to street gangs that many people would now automatically see the term as strictly about gangs.
Same here, although I must be somewhat older and first heard the term in the 70s. At that time I’m sure there were people back then who wouldn’t believe a gangbang could be a consensual act so there could be some confusion about that. The first mainstream reference I recall was a Woody Allen movie and a girl who said she was on her school’s Gangbang team. WTH was that movie?
ETA: Play It Again, Sam. Wrong joke though:
Sharon: This film I did got very good reviews. As a matter of fact, I got singled out. Of course, I was the only girl in it with nine men.
Allan: Really? What’s it called? Maybe I saw it.
Sharon: Gang bang.
I was a kid (~10 years old), my family was watching an episode of the sketch comedy TV show “Bizarre”. There was a skit about a TV channel called CFAG (the Channel For All Gays) and there was a sports report about the San Francisco 69ers. (What can I tell you, TV was pretty classy in the early '80s.)
My mom was laughing at the “69ers” joke, so I kept asking her what the joke was. She tried to put me off, but I just wouldn’t stop asking. Finally she gave me an unvarnished definition. That shut me up pretty quickly.
What worried me about the Lewinsky affair was that my children didn’t find it necessary to ask “Dad, what’s a blowjob?”
It is always useful to ask, “What do you think it means?” Often, it is simply that it is a word that they have no reference for. So, depending on the age of the child, answering, “It is a sex word” will be sufficient. You don’t really need to go into any more detail.
I never heard the term until a few months ago - and it was this woman, who happens to be extremely big-busted and significantly overweight, who talked about having strange men, who are usually extremely drunk, walk up to her and ask to do it.
Motorboating is just a joke term that acknowledges someone has, ummm, voluptuous breasts. It just means that you want to stick your face between them and make engine sounds sort of like blowing on a child’s belly. Some guys really do really like big breasts but I don’t think the motorboating part is serious.
