I just had a friend around, bearing gifts to celebrate the birth of the new Tiny Boy (now seven weeks old). She bought a gift for the Zeroth Birthday Boy (of course), plus some for the big sisters (so they don’t feel left out) and a little something for me (a bar of nice smelling soap … well, it’s the thought that counts!).
But it got me to thinking. One person was conspicuously missing from the list. And, thinking back over the last four years, I can think of only one gift which has been given to Mr Aspy to recognise the births of any of our children, though I’ve recieved many myself.
What’s worse, I’m guilty of the same thing - last time I got a bunch of gifts to celebrate the birth of a subsequent child, sure enough it was one for the kid, one for the big siblings, one for the mum.
Is this typical? Guys - have you ever gotten a “baby congratulations” gift? Do you feel left out if you don’t? Does anyone here give them, as a rule?
I have never seen anyone give or receive a “congrats on your baby” gift for the Dad. In fact, I can’t think of anyone giving a mom a congrats gift other than flowers. In most cases, I have seen both parents receive gifts that are for the baby, but ones that particular parent will use or need, like a nursing pillow or caddy to store items in their car.
Mr. Lissar was just given a book for Christmas, something like The New Dad’s Survival Guide or something. And we mutually received a washing machine from my parents as a glad-you’re-having-a-baby present, but I guess that doesn’t count. So far I’m the one who’s been inundated with baby-related presents.
Sure. Quite common here. The folks at work gave me gifts for both kids. It usually takes one of the women at work to organize it though. Everyone throws in a few bucks and one of the women goes out and gets a bunch of baby stuff: outfits, wipes, soap, diapers, and the like.
Never gotten anything. One and Only Wanderers stole my joke.
Leaffan - I don’t think that’s what the OP is referring to. I’ve gotten bags of baby stuff at work as well - but it was all stuff for the baby (clothes, diapers, toys, etc), not for me.
