I did find data for 04 on Wikipedia. Some more searching might unearth records going farther back.

Memories tells me that newspapers overwhelmingly endorsed Republican candidates for president most of this century, with the exception of Johnson in 1964.
This was back in the days when most newspapers were individually owned and not small parts of large chains. Newspaper publishers were notoriously conservative capitalists as a group. The exceptions were rare and concentrated in a few large cities. And the bulk of newspapers have always been in small cities just because there are so many more of them. (1500-2000 dailies)
It’s somewhat closer if you look just at the top quartile of major newspapers.
