Yep. Apparently, GWB has one too.
Same here. I know this delves into the debate of “fake news” vs. journalism, but I don’t think anyone can argue that there’s a definite, even respectable, political edge to the show, and I wish that Jon would’ve challenged Kerry a bit (same with Michael Moore, who Jon pretty much softballed as well). Especially considering how Jon tore into that one guy a few weeks ago who wrote the book explaining the Iraq/al Queda link, a day or two after the idea was officially debunked.
Then again, TDS is a bunch of people with a little power who presumably want Kerry to be elected, so I can see why they’d use their pull to their advantage. After all, not only do they never claim to be real news, they never really act like it either.
Really? The problem in 2000 was that everyone was expecting moron Bush to get creamed by the more intelligent Gore, and he held his own. The winner of a TV debate is based on who comes across better on TV - I’ve heard that those listening on the radio thought that Nixon won the 1960 debate with Kennedy.
I hope the Democrats are Tivoing the Daily Show - the writers are giving them better ammunition against Bush than they seem to be able to come up with themselves. Stewart set Kerry up with the comment about the loyalty oath. Remember, half the criticism of Kerry on the show is that he isn’t clobbering Bush well enough.
I was a bit surprised about how Stewart let Kerry make a speech. I don’t think he’d let any other politician get away with that. Though Burt Reynolds took over even more the other night.
Oh, and for those of you who turned off too early last night, the cute “oil company” girl was Stephen Colbert’s daughter. They played outtakes over the closing credits, and she was even cuter there than she was during the segment.
Anyone else notice how you can tell who the interviewers like and who they don’t? The ones they like, the reporter plays the fool, the ones they don’t, they let the interviewee hang himself. They clearly like the gas station owner last night. It’s an interesting way for a comedy show to do investigative reporting.
In one of the Gore/Bush debates, Gore audibly sighed (and may have been caught rolling his eyes) in apparent derision during Bush’s responses. Even though Gore made some better points, he was seen as impolite and smarmy, the political equivilent of Terrell Owens spiking the ball on the Star at Texas Stadium. Then in the following debate, Gore went overboard in being deferential, which probably turned off people as well. That debate led to an SNL skit which consisted of repeated “I agree with the Governor on that” responses. Bush “won” by beating ridiculously low expectations…
Even so, saying he’s so good and has never lost a debate sounds weird to me. I didn’t watch all three debates, but if Gore lost, it was on attitude and not substance (the way you’d really judge a debate, not the poll-based way we judge ours).
Did he really say
Yeah, but it wasn’t nearly as weird in context.
It was exactly on attitude. I’m sure Bush was helped by his compassionate conservative pose. I don’t want to go too far into GD territory here. I’m an arrogant techie, so Gore worked fine for me, and Bush has set off a visceral dislike in me from the very beginning. But Gore rubbed my wife the wrong way. Gore is just not a good campaigner. In 1992 he had Ed Koch’s endorsement, but totally botched the New York primary. It’s a shame that debates are decided on image not issues, but i suppose we have to live with it until the American public gets smartened up.
I think he also prefaced it with a sort of, “You know what’s really weird… maybe I shouldn’t say this…”
Same here; I can no longer tolerate “real” news anymore. Its all sound bites and spin (pick your side). I haven’t watched TV news in a long time, other than in passing. At least TDS pokes fun at itself as well as those it skewers. The one a while back where Bush 2000 “debates” Bush 2004 was priceless! Kerrys campaign would do well to learn from these folks. You can reach a lot of people with comedy, and Kerry could definitely afford to lose a little starch. He did seem pretty comfortable. I would have rather he skipped the stump points and just winged it a bit, though.
Stewart and Corddry had what I thought was a great exchange about that the other night. Jon asked something about whether the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth charges are supported by facts, and Corddry (reporting from Vietnam :D) started making fun of him. “My job as a journalist is to devote 50% of the time to parroting what one side says, and 50% to what the other side says. Oh, this allegation is spurious, look at me” etc.
Dang, I missed it. I’m up for a rerun of it though, if I can catch it.
Is anybody here familiar with the TDS repeat pattern on Comedy Central? I seem to recall catching the John McCain broadcast on two different evenings.
They premiere at 11:00pm, and are re-broadcast at 1:00am, 10:00am, and 7:00pm. All times are Eastern.
I’m not positive about the 1:00am time…it is somewhere between midnight and 1:30am.
Stewart’s political bias couldn’t have been plainer had he gotten on his knees and started servicing Kerry on live TV. It was pretty smarmy and I felt as if I needed a shower after watching it.
DAMN those fake news show hosts and their political bias
I need a shower after just about everytyhing that comes out of GW’s (handlers) mouths! :dubious: :wally
Whoops! drop the extra “y”! I know how anal SDMB folks can be…
And BTW, a TV show with political bias??? Shocking; I’ll alert the media…
Here’s a link to Atrios’s transcript of that bit.
And hey, here’s a transcript of John Kerry’s TDS appearance.
Yeah. You probly feel the same watching O’Reilly I bet.
