Daily Show quote: our kids would have to go to school with their kids :-O

I think both.

Why? No, serious question, I missed that show. What did he say that makes you think that?

I haven’t really heard of Muslims, certainly those in Western countries, having a problem with pigs. You move to Texas and are surprised there are pigs? They had to know they were here. But who’s not going to be upset about thier neighbor doing what he could to intimidate and insult him?

And for that matter ammassing on a regular basis a large group of people who hate and fear you, next door.

Well if I lived next door to a church, I might not like those church bells every Sunday morning when I wanted to sleep in. And I really didn’t like the apartment complex guy who had to run his leaf blower at 8 on Saturday. But I didn’t start a campaine of harrassment against either the church or the leaf blower guy.

(For that matter, I’d rather live next to a mosque than a pig farm…have you ever smelled pig shit? I think the Muslims are showing quite a bit of restraint.)

Do mosques in the US even do a call to prayer? I know where a couple of mosques in Chicago are (one on N. Clark in Andersonville, and one on N. Elston, by Monstrose) and neither of them even have minarets.

Here in Bulgaria, anyway, there are mosques all over and I’ve never once heard a call to prayer. (Although I know people who live in all-Muslim villages who say that the mosques there do have a call. Maybe it’s only in the cities where they don’t.)

OK, I found the Pit thread, which included a direct quote from a newspaper account, and I withdraw my question about why the Muslims are offended. To quote the newspaper article: “one man [is] threatening to hold pig races on Fridays just to offend the Muslims.” So I guess if your next door neighbor is publicly threatening to do something for the specific purpose of pissing you off, then yes, you have every right and reason to be, in fact, pissed off.

It would be fun to open a stand during the races with a big sign stating you are selling “crackers”.

nm…

My memory is that it was a response to a direct question, along the lines of “Do you find this offensive?”

Here’s a link to the Daily Show segment under discussion. It’s great/sad stuff.
