It’s abhorrent enough to complain against the Islamic center in NYC. Still misguided, but at least I can understand that some people feel like it will serve as an unwelcome reminder of the 9/11 tragedy. I disagree, but it might be possible to construct a rational argument using the sensitivity to 9/11 argument.
But terrorists have never attacked Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Wait, I take that back: Muslim terrorists have never attacked the 'Boro. Because who ever set fire to the construction materials on Saturday night was nothing but a cowardly terrorist himself (or themselves). Makes me ashamed of Tennessee – hopefully this will shock more reasonable residents to take a stand in favor of their Muslim neighbors.
This whole stupid “mosque at Ground Zero!” crap has started a whole new wave of anti-Muslim sentiment and people acting like the terrorists they claim to hate.
I actually was staying in Murfreesboro on 9/11 and vividly recall watching the towers fall at my contract worksite (in Shelbyville) that day surrounded by true American patriots (some may call them rednecks). A report came in that someone was actually flying an Afganistan flag the next day and let me tell you those redneck boys were fighting mad. It would not suprise me if the locals there still hold a grudge; somebody there was obviously smypothetic enough to fly an Afgani flag during that time (quite ballsy). Although I don’t think that it’s an excuse to firebomb a place of worship; just not suprised that it would happen down there.
Given that the flag of Afghanistan has changed about 14 times in the last 40 years – cite – I doubt if 1 American in 1,000 knew what the flag looked like in September 2001.
Thank you, I will carry on then. As I said it’s no justification for fire bombing but my impression of the crowd was that there were actual elements in it that would actually follow thru on thier threats to a “supposed” siting of an enemy flag. The Klan was founded not very far from there, so I’m Just saying I’m not the least bit suprised that it happened there.
As for rednecks not caring about an attack on New York you obviously haven’t been listening to much country music over the past nine years.
To me, though, it seems like it will be a far more normal 9/11 than the ones previous. Perhaps because it will fall on a weekend, so it is more difficult to avoid planning “regular” events on that day. (I’ve seen plenty of non 9/11 related events scheduled for that day, which I haven’t in previous years.)
On the downside, it means that it would be far easier to attack a regular event, as well, if that floats your boat.
September 11 was just something that happened on TV to me.
I’ve posted this before, skip if you get bored. Mama Plant is from Dyersburg, TN.
Two EM techs from Tennessee drove up to NY to offer help. They were interviewed on CNN, and when I literally heard someone speaking in my mother tongue, it became real and I wept a bit.
However…do mosques in residential areas broadcast the call to prayer at 5:00 AM? That next door would piss off someone as liberal as I.
I understand. Terrorists with any agenda will be more able to strike once we let our guard down. Which isn’t incompatible with the proposition that muslims are in danger. They are, after all, Americans too, who will also like many Americans have their guard down more on 9/11 than in previous years.
Bosda, I heard there was a candle-light gathering at the courthouse last night for Mosque supporters. Do you know anything about it? I hope they had a good crowd (and nobody was disruptive).
Man, if I were you, I’d be tempted to have the biggest freaking Eid party of all time, covered in red, white, and blue, complete with a reading of the Constitution.
