The Daily Show sent Asif Manvi to Murfreesboro the other day, and he interviewed a truly wacko woman who seemed to believe any bad thing she read about Muslims on the internet. She was apparently heading some community group working against some kind of expansion of a mosque.
Here, it’s the Perry County Gun Bash.

I’ve been an amateur vexillologist since I was a teenager - I have over 200 flags on the south wall of my basement not 3 feet from my head alone - and I don’t even know what the flag of Afghanistan was in September, 2001. Mainly because the government itself was in flux, there was the Taliban that was technically in control and their flag, and the previous flag that was also used by the Northern Alliance that was flying at the UN the day of the attacks on New York (since that government was the one recognized by the UN, not the Taliban).
However…do mosques in residential areas broadcast the call to prayer at 5:00 AM? That next door would piss off someone as liberal as I.
Do churches in residential areas ring bells at early hours of Saturdays and Sundays?

Not that I am aware of. ![]()

In Muslim countries, yes.
I’ve never heard any calls to prayer in the US, ever.

“I really don’t think much about it,” Hopson said in response to the fire at the future mosque site over the weekend.
…
Huh. No kidding.

On the other side of the aisle sat those who were against the mosque, like Collier Hopson, who parked his truck in front of the Rutherford County Courthouse where mosque supporters met.
In the back sat a spraypainted sign reading “No Mosque.”
“I really don’t think much about it,” Hopson said in response to the fire at the future mosque site over the weekend. “I hate that someone’s equipment got burned up, but I agree with the reason they did it.”
Hopson said he sees the future mosque as “an open door for radical
Islam.”It ain’t over.
These folks are fucking idiots.
And by “encourage” I mean, attracts ignorant, racist rednecks to commit arson against the mosque under construction.
Feds investigate fire at Murfreesboro mosque site
It’s abhorrent enough to complain against the Islamic center in NYC. Still misguided, but at least I can understand that some people feel like it will serve as an unwelcome reminder of the 9/11 tragedy. I disagree, but it might be possible to construct a rational argument using the sensitivity to 9/11 argument.
But terrorists have never attacked Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Wait, I take that back: Muslim terrorists have never attacked the 'Boro. Because who ever set fire to the construction materials on Saturday night was nothing but a cowardly terrorist himself (or themselves). Makes me ashamed of Tennessee – hopefully this will shock more reasonable residents to take a stand in favor of their Muslim neighbors.
Yep, drove to Murfreesboro to work for quite a while. Daily show did a piece on the Mosque and interviewed the wacky anti Islam lady heading the protest. That and our “Have a Nice Day” candidate for governor doesn’t make us look to great.
This whole M’boro mosque thing makes me sad for fellow Tenneseans.
Some of the same people who are fighting against the mosque are fairly civil to Muslims when working together. They do business everyday with them. But…during the protest and counter protests several weeks back, they did an ugly about face. Or maybe were just flaunting their bigotry when there were like-minded people to band with. Either way, they are the people who frighten me more than Muslim terrorists ever could.
missred (who lives just up the road)

Surely you exaggerate. They don’t want to kill you, they are just frightened and misinformed.

When I lived in Mannheim, Germany, my apartment was next to a church. Care to guess why I never needed an alarm clock?

Because of the Mannheim Steamroller?
Crazy Lady Threatened?
Laurie Cardoza-Moore, who spoke on the Comedy Central program last week against plans to expand the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, said in a news release she has notified authorities about threats left on her cell phone last Thursday.

Nothing specific about the nature of the threat. Maybe they threatened to read passages of the Koran, or the Constitution.

There is a Muslim Center with prayer rooms down the street from me. They only broadcast the evening call to prayer over a loud speaker. It isn’t that loud.
I live in Brooklyn NY.
Islamic Center of Murfreesboro opponent Kevin Fisher has announced a “In Defense of our Community” rally to take place at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Rutherford County Courthouse.*********************
Fisher has said he plans to present a petition in opposition to the Islamic Center’s plans to build a nearly 53,000-square-foot mosque and community center on Veals Road off Bradyville Pike southeast of Murfreesboro. Fisher has said about 20,000 people have signed the petition.
