DalovinDJ: You're not the arbiter of hip or cool...

Am I the only one who has read dalovindj’s treatises on hipness and coolness in a humorous light?

It seems to me that it’s consistently been at least partially tongue-in-cheek.

In other words, I think y’all are the victims of the biggest mass-whoosh I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Cats,

You can’t win. You know that, don’t you? It doesn’t matter if you whip us, you’ll still be where you were before, at the bottom. And we’ll still be the lucky ones at the top with all the breaks. It doesn’t matter. Greasers will still be greasers and socs will still be socs. It doesn’t matter.

See? It’s not worth the argument…sheesh don’t you guys ever watch the movies?

Stay gold, Ponyboy, Stay gold.

Apparently so.

So if a comedian tells a joke and the audience does not laugh, it is the audiences’ “fault” for not getting it? Or the comedian’s for telling a bad joke?

lol

We’ll do it for Johnny!

Um. No.

[Julie Brown voice]Johnny? Like, who’s Johnny? There was this one guy named Johnny but he always had stuff stuck in his braces…[/Julie Brown voice]

Uh, Bean Counter? You haven’t been paying attention. Other posters (including myself) have said that we find dj entertaining and funny at times. It has been said in this thread as well as others.

As I said before, I don’t like some things he has said, but I have enjoyed a lot of his posts. Unless you have a turd in your pocket please don’t assume you can speak for everyone.

Or is it that the particular audience is not prepared for that kind of joke? Didn’t Lenny Bruce and George Carlin build a career on this concept?

Now please. I’m not saying “dalovindj is to SDMB comedy as Lenny Bruce and Carlin are to stand-up comedy.” I’m just saying I’ve seen dalovindj turn the comedy off and occasionally even exhibit self-deprecation. These things tell me that you people are blowing this out of proportion.

wring - Again, don’t speak for everyone.

I have gotten some pretty good laughs over some of the things DJ has written. I have always thought that most of his posts firmly had tongue planted in cheek. And, as far as the WHOOSH - Yeah, I have thought the same thing when I have seen how seriously some his posts have been taken.

I am not going to get in a flame war with posters I like, especially over something as damn silly as this, but I do take exception when someone speaks for everyone, especially when it is the exact opposite of how I feel.

If you don’t like his style - I completely respect your right to this opinion. Not everyone has the same type of humor. Just remember there are many other opinions as well and I would hope you would respect them as yours should be respected.

Two words? That’s it?

I’m not interested in deconstructing dalovindj’s posts for the slightest shiny sliver of irony or sarcastic humor. But I’m aware of at least one other place where dj himself says that his intent is humorous.

By the way, please note that the whoosh idea did not start with me. And several other people agree. If this makes me unoriginal, I’m prepared to deal with that.

diane???

Don’t believe I even tried to ‘speak for everyone’. I posted that I ‘Got’ his gig, didn’t find it amusing/interesting or whatever. Came back and saw some one post 'hey, am I the only one who gets that he’s joking, ’ and posted as a direct reply, ‘no’ in other words, no, other people (In this very thread) get that he’s ‘doing a gig’, joking etc, and don’t find it particularly amusing.

Ogre see above response to Diane speaking only for myself, yes, I got that he was joking. No, I don’t find the schtick particularly amusing. I don’t find Gallagher funny, either, or CarrotTop, or any number of other things. YMMV, but it’s not a ‘whoosh’.

wring - If I misinterpreted your reply to Ogre wrong, I apologize. I guess I am just a little taken back with the slamming DJ has been getting the last few days over things that have clearly been tongue in cheek.

The “whoosh” isn’t meant for those who don’t find him funny, but for those who don’t seem to realize that he isn’t serious in his hip-cat persona.

Is it just me, or is this a really dumb debate?

No harm, no foul Diane. I pro’lly shoulda trimmed the thing down to :
am I the only one who

No.

Live and learn.

(the only reason I posted to this was to point out that there were more possabilities than “you think he’s funny= you ‘get’ him” vs. "you don’t think he’s funny = you don’t ‘get’ him).

OK. Got it. Sorry for the confusion.

Of course it’s a dumb debate. When has that stopped us in the past?

Um, guys? I don’t post a lot (duh). But and hearty me too to Cartooniverse.

That’s why I’ve been reading this board off and on for a year. It’s such a diverse group who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. You see new posters being welcomed if they have something to add, and jerks are (fairly promptly and vigorously) shown the door.

Just my take, but I see “defending dalovindj’s hipness” (mostly thinking of Krispy Original’s post) as being entirely besides Fenris’ point. Go, be hip. It’s a fun part of your posting style. And you certainly don’t need my permission

But it’s not worth getting into flame wars over. It’s the kind of thing that should have gone into, “hey I was joking, it’s cool man…” pretty damn quick. We all have entirely different sets of criteria, and that’s cool.

I hate clubs. I find them boring, loud, and unpleasantly crowded. So I see your name, and don’t really get a “cool vibe”. I get a “whatever, not in my area of interest”.

And then IGNORE that part of your persona and pay attention to what you actually have to say on the topic. Which is usually pretty interesting

(trying to avoid the terming “fighting ignorance”, failing miserably)

Subjective opinions are great. Love to hear 'em. Can’t get enough of the circus peanuts debate.

But see, those are “things I like” posts. Disagreeing with people’s likes on the basis that it is not cool implies that, somewhere out there, accessible only to those as uniquely blessed, is the ultimate and supreme knowlege of cool. It’s like, the ultimate appeal to fuzzy outside authority.

[sub]Or in other words, cite?[/sub]

Well rarely do I enter the pit, I usually lurk around the GD and GQ areas. But when I want to have a laugh or look at a credible rant I come in here. I first saw DJ come into the GD last month sometime. I never really replied on any of his posts. I thought he seemed to be looking for something. Some sort of acceptedness. I mean he has preached his way form 0 posts to over 300 in a month. And so far what I have read, he is a temp in New York and has a lot of time on his hands. But he looks to be just arriving on the ‘great spin scene’ in NYC yet he is looking to other venues for his strength and acceptedness. Its kinda plucky.
As for the OP. Rock on! someone had to say it sooner or later. I wonder how many other boards he has graced with his eloquence. Unless he is of course a true “FROSH”
