DAMMIT! FCA

sorry, i need a little rant:

Ok, my coaches always do teh ol’ ‘let’s thank the one that got us here’ thing before a game, and everbody (minutes 4 or 5 of us heretics) bows and prays, blah blah, jesus help us. Ok. that’s fine, they aren’t really pushing very hard. But today, our coaches brings down this guy (he asked him to come in), he leads us in prayer before the practice, and starts going on about how important it is to have hte lord in our life, etc. i mean, FUCK! now they’re openly pushing religion on us, implying that it will help our playing time if we go to these damn bible studies. AAAARG!!! damn public schools!

chris

Dude, if this is a public school it’s happening in, that’s hella-illegal. Talk to your parents, talk to administrators, talk to the ACLU. Your coach is debasing the sport and God by using playing time as a carrot to get you to these Bible studies.

You got pads on, kick that fundie’s ass!!!

Then sue the school district. Sue ‘em so fuckin’ hard they don’t know what the fuck hit 'em.

My fuckin federal tax dollars. It’s not only violating the constitution, but your rights and mine.

Your coach is conducting himself in an unprofessional manner. He should be fired for this. Contact your ACLU right away. This is a direct violation of the law.

You have every right to be pissed off and revolted by this sort of outright discrimination. Hit them where it hurts. These rectal cavities are abusing our tax dollars.

PS: Let us know how it turns out.

It is people like this that make me admit that I am a Christian in hushed tones. I hope you sue that school to the point that the front door reads “Your Real Name” Public School! It is so illegal that my head is spinning. You were tolerant enough to sit back and not say anything during the prayers (also illegal) and you get this in return? I don’t plan on being force-fed another person’s religion and I don’t want mine forced on another. Tell your coach that I am praying for him, praying that he will get his head out of his ass, praying that he will obey the laws of the land as the Bible asks, and praying that his pusher friend will “see the light” and quit giving me a bad name!

Right on, Ellykat. Wlecome to the STraight Dope!

I too am a Christian and I would be totally pissed off if any of my teachers did this.
Hell, I go to a Catholic college, and they don’t even push religion at ALL.

I like you ellykat, you are obviously a thinking person. Feel free to contribute to any of my threads anytime.

Stick around, you’ll have lots of fun here!

so i talked to the coach on the way to a game today (4 hour drive…not fun) about the whole thing, and he apologized. The guy came down w/ teh coaches permission, then turned around and made up the crap about the coach asking him there, it affecting playing time in any way, or that it was really being heavily endorsed by the coaches. He (my head coach) said that he wasn’t even planning on attending the bible study classes, and that they weren’t being pushed by hte school any more than any other club. My coach didn’t know he was going to say much more than, ‘Fellowship of Christian Athletes is goign to be starting a club on campus’ This makes more sense, as this guy has coached me in FB this year and last, and in track for three years. I really respect him, and he’s a nice guy (as in driving 45 minutes out of his way to drop something off at my house that i had given to him and forgot to get back). He is one of the few adults at my school taht i can honestly say i respect. He just couldn’t control what his guest speaker said. So basically, i leaped to conclusions and made the wrong assumptions. end rant. And all that crap about suing the school…now where would that REALLY land me? my parents are hardcore christians, most of the people at my school (friends included) are christian and would take offense to my actions, there is no way in hell i’d see the field in a game situation, it would take up a shitload of time i don’t have, and probably wouldn’t change anythign till i’m out of college. And i might have changed tings today, just by talking to the coach. There was no prayer before the game today (and when i said prayer earlier, it was simply ‘Let’s take a minute’ or ‘let’s thank the one that got us here’ and then silence.) although that might have been because our schedule was messed up (away team, and we were running late). ::shrugs::

chris

Good for you heyjoe for having the courage to clear things up. Your situation was a little more complex than you let on, but I’m still glad you were able to share it with us. Hang in there and do well in school.
All the best,

Zenster

Glad you got everything straightened out. I realize that all the talk about suing the school may not be a realistic but stuff like that really gets me going (Sorry). Anyway, glad it worked out.

The FCA was just trying to help. You see, God takes a VERY personal interest in high school sports. God will gladly drop anything he’s doing – creating life, battling the Devil, inspiring good works from nuns and priests and stuff – to sit in the bleachers of a high school football game. He counts up the number of heathens on each side, and whichever side has more heathens, He causes that side to be prey to fumbles, interceptions and dumb false start penalties that wipe out 80-yard touchdowns. So give the FCA a chance – it could mean a state championship!!!

Snooooopy, I’m tempted to say that you just posted your best reply ever! That was painfully accurate and sarcastic, all at the same time.

::roar of the crowd::

“And Snooooopy kicks the game winning extra point!”
