My grandfather turned 87 in April. When I ask him how he is he says “I’m vertical, so I can’t complain.”

Well think about it this way: on this birthday, you got about 1.2% older KlondikeGeoff. My last birthday I got nearly 2.4% older, and some of these whippersnappers around here will probably increase their age by as much as 6 or 7% this year. Sucks to be them, ha ha!

I remember reading your post about climbing a mountain for your 80th birthday ( http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=432618&highlight=birthday ) when I first signed up here and thinking “Damn, I’d have trouble doing that now and I’m only 44.”

My dad turns 79 this year. Thank goodness, he is in pretty good health, and remains active. He and my mother just took my niece (his granddaughter) to Paris for her 16th birthday.
I only hope that all the elderly people I know, including you, continue in good health.
Sorry, love, you’re still the oldest. Will it make you feel better if I manage to trick my grandmother into posting? It will take a while, mind you, as right now we happen to be 1200km apart…

I don’t know what your politics are like, KG, but at my favorite pinko hangout, Daily Kos, there’s a user with the handle Charlotte Lucas who’s become a site favorite with series of memoirish posts about WWII, the Great Depression, and the like. She’s in her 90s, I believe.

I’m not older than you . . . but in 8 days I’ll have Medicare. This is the only time I’m actually looking forward to another birthday. Now I’ll be able to afford two knee surgeries and two cataract surgeries . . . and someday, an aortal valve replacement.
