OK, not really, but I have noticed a change recently in my body odor. Seems a little more acrid. Not looking for specific medical advice obviously, but are there things in general which might account for such a change or is such a change potentially indicative of something medical? My diet and activities haven’t changed to any great degree recently, no foods added or subtracted or anything like that. I have also heard that one’s bodily flora adapt to different deodorants and so one should change brands periodically. Sounds like BS to me but anything to it?
Maybe your sinuses have just unclogged?
"…talk to your doctor if you notice a change in body odor — it may be a sign of certain medical conditions. A fruity smell, for example, may be a sign of diabetes, and an ammonia smell could indicate liver or kidney disease. In addition, a rare condition known as fish-odor syndrome (trimethylaminuria) causes an odor similar to rotting fish. People with fish-odor syndrome have a defective gene that prevents them from metabolizing trimethylamine (TMA), a natural byproduct of the digestion of some foods, such as saltwater fish, eggs and liver."
So, what do you reek like, exactly?
How about a rotten fruit smell? There was this older crazy guy that came into my old job (a pharmacy), and he always sort of smelled like rotten fruit. It wasn’t a mild smell either, it was rank and dominated an area about him, perhaps 20 feet or so. Everybody commented on it, and it wasn’t as if he were really dirty looking.
Maybe diabetes combined with drinking too much if one of my friends is any indication.
Some possibilities to consider:
–Are you wearing any different clothing? My husband, for some strange and inexplicable reason, always smells bad when he wears a blue t-shirt. Something in the dye must react with his skin/perspiration.
– Are you removing your clothing from the washing machine promptly and drying it thoughoughly? Is the humidity in your house high, encouraging mold growth? Both could make your clothing stink.
It’s definitely not my clothes. They are clean, dry, well-ventilated and mold-free. The only odor they have is what they pick up off me.
The smell doesn’t remind me of any particular odor. It’s just me, but…sharper? More acrid? Definitely not fruity of fishy or ammonia.
Any comment on the idea of changing deodorant brands every so often to thwart the stink-germ’s resistance?
Not that I know much about deoderant, try Arm & Hammer??? I would ask your Dr. just to be safe.
You are not alone. This very same thing has happened to me in the past three months or so. It is most notable if one day of shower/bathing is missed, used to be I could miss a day and still not smell, no more. Are you on any drugs? The deodorant thing is a moot point as I have various types.
Never thought to bring it up 'cause hey it is just me. Wrong again.
This happened to me a few years ago! Suddenly I seemed more … pungent. Very unladylike. It seems to flare up every now and then, and quite frankly I’m dealing with it right now. My solution back then was to change deodorants (I started using Degree), and that worked fine for a while. Eventually I switched to Dove, and also started using Dove bar soap in the shower, but just yesterday when I went to the grocery store I decided to try switching brands again. So today I showered with Dial soap and am using Secret deodorant (which, I noticed, has 19% antiperspirant instead of Dove’s 14.5%, though who knows whether the extra 4.5% is enough to actually matter), and when I get home from work I’ll see if I can smell a difference. I’ll probably stick with this combo at least through the week. I would have gone back to Degree, but they don’t make the product that I liked anymore (or, at least, my grocery store doesn’t carry it anymore).
I’ve never mentioned this to a doctor, but then I hardly ever go to the doctor. If it’s still an issue the next time I get a checkup, I might mention it then.
Good luck with your situation!
Nope, I’m not on any drugs, except generic Alleve as needed.
That happnes to me once in a blue moon (stranger still, my left pit seems much more severe than my right). I take an extra long shower and then sponge my pits down with alcohol to kill any bacteria that might be clinging to my armpit fuzz. That usually does the trick.
I work out a lot and always assumed the weird super-funk had something to do with fluctuations in testosterone or some fleeting imbalance in body chemistry.
Kind of related, my shoes have been stinking lately, but only when my feet are in them. My feet don’t stink, my socks don’t, and when I take off my shoes and take a whiff, they aren’t unbearable (normal shoe smell, not bad, but not yummy).
Put my feet in them, and wow, if I cross my legs (with foot on knee), I can smell what seems to be nasty boot smell. I don’t wear boots, and all the various parts don’t smell bad apart. I spray them with Lysol daily, shower daily (sometimes twice), and have never had a problem until the last couple weeks.
