Seeing all of the Atkins Dopers in this and other threads has made me brave enough to at least buy the book. I’ve got a 5 year high school reunion this summer, and I’ve gained 40 pounds since graduation. My hubby and I are tired of being fat lazy lumps (we live 2 blocks from one of the nicest parks in town and almost NEVER go).
But what do you do with your 20 lb bag of rice and 6 lbs of pasta from Sam’s Club?!?!?!
Donate to a pantry? Make pasta necklaces and other children’s crafts?
Singular1 that is so great!
I’ve been battling some cravings since I tried the carbolite bars. I have decided that I haven’t the control yet to have them in my house. Then last night I discovered mocklate danish. Now I’m probably going to have to hide the cocoa. I’m getting better though. At least I’m not consuming boxes of donuts.
The energy is great, no? I had the day off today, and I’d planned on lazing around and reading, but I woke up at six and by seven I was cleaning house.
The pepperoni is good, but I also love making the cheesers. You just sprinkle shredded cheese in a pan, let it get crispy, and VOILA! Cheese crisps. I make taco salads with them by pressing the cheese around a bowl and letting it cool and air dry. Good stuff!
Avarie537, my rice and pasta is still sitting in the house. I’m not sure what to do with it. I did give away a lot of my boxes of mac&cheese when the Boy Scouts were doing a food drive in the area. If they’re unopened, a food bank is a good idea. If they’re opened, I don’t know. I can’t convince myself to throw it away, because I grew up poor. I may end up giving it to family.
I just started, too, singular1, last week. The chocolate cravings were pretty intense the first few days. I need to lose weight, and also cut out refined sugar because it causes migraines.
Where can I find the Delite chocolate and Atkins PB cups?
I’ve seen various brands of “power bars,” thinking they might be a good substitute for candy bars, but they all have something like 45+ carbs in them.
I just bought Easter candy for my kids, but since I’ve been on the diet for a little over a week, I actually feel good, and don’t have the urge to sneak a few Cadbury Eggs (although I though about it ).
I’ll have to try the microwaved pepperoni. That sounds good. I do miss having something salty and crunchy. And thanks for the link. I’m off to check it out now!
For those craving salty/crunchy things, once you’re past induction, stock up on things like almonds. If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, they have the absolute best prices on almonds, macadamia nuts, pecans, walnts, etc. You can get 'em raw or roasted, salted or unsalted. Peanuts and cashews are higher in carbs since they are really legumes (beans) and not really nuts, so you have to be a lot more careful with the quantities there. Nuts are really high in EFAs (essential fatty acids), high in fiber, and they are really filling. I just had a handful of almonds. Yummmmmm.
Bibliocat, The WalMart and Target Supercenters near me both have those types of bars in their diet sections, so you should be able to get them in Baltimore. WalMart also has a good selection of Russell Stover sugar free candies (including chocolates). You could also try online at someplace like netrition.com or thebetterhealthstore.com. Be careful: that laxative warning on the back is no joke.
I’m down 21.5 lbs (went up a half a pound this weekend). Hubby is down 27 lbs. Go him!
hang in there. Ive been on low carb since Jan 1st. Lost 40 lbs. Then…
fell off the wagon at a 4 day out of town wedding/reunion bash. All the bad stuff too
beer
lasagna
taters
bread (oooooh the bread!)
White Castle hamburgers (not avail. where I live)
well 10 lbs have found there way back on board
my bathroom scale grins at me with the “nice to have you back” look" in its tiny digital eyes…
Im going back on, not looking forward to the 2-3 day carb cravings but i know for a fact that they pass.
one helpful hint… always keep lots of low carb stuff in the house. If you can afford it, lots of deli meat and cheese on hand. sugarless jello with fresh whipped cream is good for a sweet fix.
lately I have been doing the low carb shepards pie.
califlower layer
cooked gr. beef layer
shredded chz. layer
all in a cass. dish in the oven for an hour or so at 350 d.
also in a pinch. you can eat an entire pizza.
The only trick.
Just the toppings!!! Toss ALL the crust. (i know its really a shame)
I try to keep the low-carb stuff around, but I also have 2 kids who love Mac & Cheese, and a husband who believes no meal is complete without a baked potato and dinner rolls.
It’s been hard, but I think I’ve kicked that initial carb-addiction.
My husband says I’m nuts. He thinks I should be doing Slim-Fast if I want to lose weight (I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work for me), and says there’s no way I can lose weight by eating eggs and bacon and meat and cheese.
He’s so helpful.
** Rushgeekgirl **, the cheesers sound fantastic! Gotta try that-I’m picking up pepperoni andd shredded cheese on the way home tonite! BiblioCat, I feel your pain about the spouse thing-but mine is exactly the opposite! Mr. Singular has been on it since January, and he is compulsively measuring every single freakin’ carb and every food he eats for precise weight, down to the teaspoon. Sorry, but unlike him, I have to be in an office for 11 hours a day, and though I am lucky enough to have a cafeteria here I can use to get bacon and eggs for breakfast and grilled chicken and salad for lunch, I am a casual dieter. That’s why I like Atkins-I know that the small salad I get is about 2 cups, and that’s good enough for me. It’s only been a week, but I’ve already had to warn him to back off with the preaching a couple times. I’m not that anal about it-I think I’m doing pretty good by cruising along at my own speed. That’s why I’m so glad to have found this board and the one rushgeekgirk recommended-no hassle, all help, regardless of your level of committment! (and slim-fast sucks!-keep up your good work!)
