I’ve had my iTouch for a long time now, and on Saturday it had about a gigabyte of free space. Yesterday, though, I went to sync it, and all of a sudden the “other” category of data jumped to over 1.8 gigabytes and it said I was over capacity. I noticed that one song I had just downloaded had not been transferred to the iPod. Puzzled, I plugged it back in and told it to sync again. This time the “other” category dropped to like 1.2 gig, and my free space jumped to like .7 gig. But the new song still wasn’t there. So I made a slight change to the song that I knew would put it on the sync list and tried to sync again. The “other” category jumped way back up in size, and the new song did sync over to the iPod. However, it gave me a message that there was not enough room for photos on the iPod, so they had all been removed.
WTF is going on. I recently updated the iTunes software. God I hate Apple.
I’ve heard consensus that the ‘other’ should be around 300 meg. if it’s not somewhere close to that there’s something wrong.
I could be wrong though.
In order to save space on my ipod (3g. 64gb) I got rid of all the album art (who needs it??)
This is just a vague recollection so it might not be true: but I think one way to fix the size of the other is to ‘reset’ your ipod and then resync everything back to it.
ETA: I just wanted to get this out somewhere: I like my apple products for the most part. But I’ll never own an Apple PC. And I find Steve Jobs to be an arrogant prick. I can’t stand the guy.
I’d be a whole lot more eager to try to help with this without the gratuitous slagging of Apple, but it sounds like your iPhoto library was being loaded onto the iPod. If so, change the default settings on the photos tab.
Course, I can’t tell if you’re running on a Windows machine or not. Given your distaste for Apple, it sounds like it. In which case you may just have added a whole bunch of new photos into your default photo directory.
Why do individuals give a toss about people slagging off companies? Particularly if it’s Apple or Microsoft. Unless you are an employee, it’s puzzling.
Please please please… How did you do this? I’ve got tons of music on my Touch, and I really would rather have more music or apps, and get rid of all that album art, but I haven’t seen a way to do that.
Album art is at most 1% or 2% of the space. The art is around 20K bytes for complicated album covers down to 5K for more simple covers. Songs tend to be about 2 to 3 Megs. Getting rid of the album art will not give you much extra space. If you buy albums from itunes the artwork is stored once for all the songs on the album so the savings will be even less.
Other is a lot of stuff, including data from your Apps. High scores, saved games and the like.
But iOS 4 does seem to have a bit of a (albeit rare) glitch for media, where it can be on the device, but not show up until you power cycle or occasionally, unsync it and resync it.
Could the file somehow be corrupted? If I remember correctly, there’s a way to redownload any file you’ve purchased. Or, if it plays on your computer, you could try converting it to another format.
