Some of you may know from another thread that I had my dog Brewster put down on Monday from cancer. Well after three days of an empty house, I decided to go the county animal shelter to look at dogs. Just look. I had gone online and browsed their adoptable dogs and had several candidates to look at. I was just going to meet them and get acquainted. The first dog was a white Labrador mix. The volunteer took us to the outside play area and left us alone to get acquainted. She was very gentle. A little shy, but not afraid of me and came up to me for treats. Soon she was sitting in front of me and acting as if she were my dog. I feel in love on the spot. I filled out the paperwork, paid her license fee (the shelter waives the adoption fee for any animal that has been there for longer than two weeks, she had been there since Dec. 6), and made the drive home.
She lay in the back seat as quiet and well-behaved as you could ask. I brought her in the house and let her explore and showed her the back yard. She wasn’t hesitant at all and seemed eager to get to know her new home. Currently she’s snoozing by my side next to the couch. She rolls over for belly rubs and she’s licking my hand already. I think she’s a keeper.
Her previous owner had passed away and I think she’s happy to finally have a new home. She’s about six years old, so she’s growing out of the rambunctious stage, which I’m glad about. I was looking for a nice quiet dog that won’t go running about the house getting into mischief.
I can see why she went home with you. Magnetic eyes.
I wasn’t going to get a kitten once, when I went to the shelter on some other business, and a little black once basically picked me. She jumped on my shoulder and wouldn’t let go. She’s next to me on the futon now. She’s a very, very affectionate cat.
She turns 11 in 2017, but the vet says she’d put her age closer to 8.
Anyway, congrats on Angel. We adopted a six-year-old, who was a retired service dog, and she was very loyal and loving after she settled in. I’m sure Angel will be great. Happy sixth night of Hanukkah.
She’s got some soulful eyes. Congratulations! Shelter dogs are the best… kind of funny how animals in general seem to know when you’ve got a home/heart-space open for them.
We once went to the shelter ‘just to look’. There’s no way we’d ever leave without a dog. At least now we know that. That one was a fine fellow, 13 yrs of happiness. When he passed we waited a year till our grown daughter showed us another shelter dog on the internet. She bears a passing resemblance to Angel, mesmerizing eyes too, but more full bore ‘pit bull’ type and no ears (somebody cut them off, damn them). We couldn’t ‘just look’ at her either, even over the internet. Six years of happiness so far.
