Imola 2005 will be remembered not for the first time an engine (Renault’s) won two back-to-back races, but for Micheal Schumacher’s amazing drive from 13th to 2nd. His was a sublime drive, unlike any I’ve seen in a very long time. To consistently put in laps more than a second faster than anyone else on the track is special. For the last 20 minutes, I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat, nearly slipping off when Schumacher made the second attempt to pass Alonso!
Alonso really is turning out to be Schumacher’s heir apparent. I can’t imagine very many of today’s drivers being able to stand up to the kind of pressure Alonso was put under.
I think Raikkonen has also withstood Schumacher’s pressure pretty well before. Had it not been for a couple engine failures he’d have been champion in 2003.
And after that it may be a forgone conclusion after a few more races. Schumacher was lapping faster than anyone else even when he left the pits with full fuel loads. If he had not stuffed up in qualifying and started from the front of the grid he would have won without ever having to even drive hard. This Ferrari may be as superior as the others.
Best race for a long time totally ruined by ITV’s inexplicable decision to cut to an ad-break with three-laps to go!!!
Completely and utterly unbelievable.
