I don’t know why but fuck it I figured since I’m new I’ll get my work in the pit down quick so I won’t have to visit this hellhole anymore (insert sarcasm here). Okay what I’m pissed about has nothing to do with anyone on the MB… yet. My problem is that there is this FUCKING horrible shooting pain pulsating from my lower back to my foot. The real reason I’m pissed is because the dumb ass fucking shit for brains doctors at the Death (health) Center in all likelyhood will tell me what every other fucking crock doctor told me. “Stretch it and you’ll be fine” Bull FUCKING SHIT I’ll be fine. I work out often and I am in decent shape so that cannot be the problem. I swear I’m just gonna friggin’ snap one of these times and take that little ear thermometor and shove it so far up his ass that it’d be easier to remove it via his mouth… okay enough hatred and pissed off-ness (I think I just made a word up) for today does anyone want No-Bake cookies?
What are no-bake cookies (or should I not ask)?
I didn’t know what a “key party” was until I read the Grinch thread, either.
On a more serious note:
Yeah, I agree with you that any doctor who tells you “it’s all in your mind” or “rub it out” is, if not a complete asshole, then at least verging on a part-time membership in the Assholes of America club.
Get a different doctor, kiddo. Use the Internet to look stuff up–start with words beginning with “neur-”, especially “neuralgia”. http://www.askjeeves.com is a good plain-English search engine. There are a number of syndromes and diseases, some more horrifying than others, that could be causing this, and you, the Consumer, have a right to answers.
Sounds like sciatica. Does it hurt no matter what position you sit/stand/lie in?
Try lying on your back and raising the affected leg straight up about 1 foot. It should hurt like shit.
Sounds like you have sciatica (as pugluvr pointed out). Unfortunately, there is no really good therapy for it – physical rehab, pain meds, surgery, and a brochure were all found to work about the same recently. It should be evaluated, however. Demand a referral to a neurosurgeon, or if you can’t get one, an orthopedic surgeon. You should at least be given some muscle relaxants and pain meds.
Not that I’m a doctor or anything.
I believe the true test is to have someone else raise the leg. If you feel pain, it is nerve pain (maybe from a ruptured disc). If you feel pain only when you raise it, that could be muscle pain (better news overall, but I wouldn’t count on it if I were you. Your symptoms sound classic).
Not a doctor, but a veteran of 2 ruptured discs.
It hurts like a bitch whatever position I am in. I could be laying down or sitting in a chair and it is still a pain. I’ve tried the raise the leg thing and it is uncomfortable to say the least. I’ve tried asking for referal to a different (more intelligent and qualified) doctor but he says that I don’t need to. The doctors back home (I’m at college right now) say pretty much the same thing. You don’t need to worry about it cause it’ll go away… sure uh huh maybe but I friggin’ doubt it. Oh well but thanks to you all for informing me at least I can point the doctor in the right direction.
I have a bit of sciatica, too, so I know what a pain it is. It’s not like you can get into a comfortable position for relief, the way you can with classic lower back pain. The inflamed sciatic nerve (the big main leg nerve which starts on your spine just above your tailbone and runs down your thigh into your leg) will just throb away regardless of what you are doing. I did a Google search for both you and me, Tiki, and some of the websites say you can originally injure the nerve with over-vigorous exercise or by just sitting too long. They recommend some intense do-nothing time – like lying flat on a firm mattress for 2 or 3 days, only getting up to go to the john. Yeah, right, like that’s an option for any of us. However, the pain does eventually fade away or at least subside until the next time you injure the nerve. The first time I screwed up my sciatic nerve, the doc prescribed Vicodan (sp?) so I could get some relief, and it was indeed helpful in keeping me drowsy and in bed for a day or two. Good luck to you.
