Avril Lavigne is not punk. No one ever said she was…including her…
I heard an interview she did once and the guy asked her something about being punk. She told him that she isnt punk and never tried or tries to be punk.
I am not saying I like Avril Lavigne, but you have to give her some respect… she has made it to the very top. She is one of the most popular artists out there right now. For God’s sakes, people like her and buy her albums! You cant argue about that and you can’t try to stop it. Just cause she wears spike bracelets, people automatically call her punk. Maybe next time you should actually think about what punk really means, it’s not about what you wear…it’s more of a way of thinking. You people are too insecure to be judging people much more famous than you.
“I’m getting more famouser every day” - Aviril just said this on Dateline NBC. and it showed her doing Shania Twain karaoke (hope that doesn’t blow her image)…
Gee… if I wasn’t impressed before… I sure am now.

uh thats d00d dude.
yeah she sucks.
and last I looked the first punk band was the sonics way back in 64 or so…sure they were more like the godfathers of punk but they had that lo-fi punk sound and with tracks like Strychnine you cant deny punks early american roots.
Screw the punk/no punk debate, my main problem with her is that she has absolutely no stage presence. Did anybody see here on SNL last week? She stood at the mic looking dazed and not moving, except that every now and then she would try some sort of jerky, mechanical “hardcore” hand motion to go along with the music. It was like some sort of Lavigne android punching the air, desperately trying to prove that she has charisma.
Who in the what now? Where did that come from? Every interview i’ve read/seen with her, she’s proclaimed her punkness. “I’m a hardcore skater punk” I believe are her exact words on more than one occasion.
When was this interview? That blows my mind…
You’re kidding right? Tell me you’re kidding. No really, tell me you’re kidding! Do you ever listen to the radio? Watch TV? I’d like nothing more than to get away from the constant Avril storm. Please, give me the address of the rock you’ve been living under, cuz I wanna rent some space there…
This is nothing. I know of an 18 year old American male high school senior with Internet access and a decent group of friends who did not, as of last July, know who Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are. I mean, even if you don’t listen to that type of music…not knowing who Britney is?
Ok, I heard the slower Awful Lavigne song on the radio today and it really sounded to me like that “pop country” crap. It truly has a country twang to it. Has anyone else noticed this?
According to her fan site she is a punk princess. Same with her offical bio.
Anyway, I don’t have a problem with her. She’s a better writer than I’ll ever be and she’s better than a lot of other pseudo-punk crap out there (Sum41, I’m looking in your direction).
 Good lord! I managed to make it to junior high or so without knowing who the Backstreet Boys were, but after that I couldn’t escape from pop culture. I didn’t have cable TV or listen to music back then… Does this guy live in an Amish community or something?
Tanaqui, surprisingly no! He lives in Fairfax, VA, which is by no means out in the sticks! On an interesting note, he knows many people who have never even heard of the Beatles. Maybe it’s just me, but I find cultural ignorance that large (even amongst teenagers) to be staggering.
I can see why the teenies like Avril’s music, though it’s not to my taste. Though to be honest, I’d even be sympathetic to Fredegonda if she had eyes like that.
Thanks for the link. In '98 I was in the radio studio with The Mother out in Eugene and punk seemed pretty alive there. She had alot of good new stuff as well as the classics: she flipped when I brought in my Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss album.
I don’t know where ogre gets off saying that just because someone is from the suburbs, they can’t look at a larger picture of the world and appreciate what they see. Punk is (was) pretty diverse in political and social concerns, as well as in viewpoint and voice. Like you have to have been a slave to hate slavery. Give me a break, punker-than-thou.
p.s. It’s not pronounced “Bow-ee”, it’s pronounced “should have died in a plane crash 25 years ago.”
Nope, I’m not kidding. I don’t listen to Top Forty radio-only to the local public broadcast station-WQED. And I don’t watch E! or MTV or any entertainment type stuff. I’m pretty much oblivious to who’s on the charts and that. My sister listens to that stuff, I don’t.
Good things happened when I kicked away from Top Forty Radio.
Of course, there ARE some current artists I like, but I just wait until they have new albums-I don’t bother with the radio or whatever.
I’m just amazed (not in a bad way, mind you) just amazed. Maybe it’s because I can’t escape the constant bombardment of the “punk queen” on the radio every 5 seconds, on magazine covers everywhere I look (do you ever scan the mag stands when waiting in line at the grocery store?) and all that jazz. I don’t mean to harp on it, it just totally awes me. 'Specially because we’re around the same age (I think)
