Damn it for taking advantage of my stupidity. I didn’t get a flu shot, and I got the nasty, achey, congesty, chill-ridden wretched Flu Of 2003.
I’ve had it now for a week and a half, and it just won’t Go. The. Fuck. Away. Just as the health news promised, it’s a real doozy this year. I’ve been taking 2 or 3 hot steamy showers a day just to decongest my lungs, my hips and legs ache as though I’ve been hiking up and down Hyde Street in San Francisco, and my voice is a full octave lower. I’ve had chills and fever like I haven’t had since I drank the tap water from our rental home in France a few years ago.
And now I learn I’ve given it to Mr. Pug and to two of my bosses at work, all of whom are not pleased with me. I’ll just be in a dark back bedroom huddled under a quilt with a mug of Theraflu if you need me.
Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck. Get your flu shots, everybody. You don’t want to catch this one.
You’ve been sick, you’re out of the loop. All available remaining flu vaccine is being generally earmarked for the “under twos” and the “over 65s”. All the rest of us mopes gotta sit and wait for the hammer to fall. Unless we wanna shell out for the na$al mi$t…
Check out GoogleNews, “flu vaccine”, see the bad news from all over the country, CA, TN, NC, FL, everywhere.
The manufacturer ran out, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your local clinic doesn’t have enough, which it does mention in the article.
I got my shot on Friday when the “oh my god, we’re out of the vaccine” shrieking began. They didn’t offer me the nasal mist, just said “We’ve got plenty left” (and looked at me amusedly, as if it was a kind of silly question) and gave me the shot in the arm.
It’s bad over here. I don’t know a single person who isn’t or hasn’t been sick. The shops are running out of Nyquil. School attendence is down over 10%. It’s insane.
My sister was advising me to get the flu shot, as I live across the street from a hospital. Don’t know, but I might. One of my friends got the flu, and she’s not been feeling well for a couple of weeks.
I drink at least 3 beers a day (usually more ) smoke a pack a day and haven’t had so much as a cold for over 10 years. No I’m not a hermit.
My theory is the smoking forces my lungs to compensate for less than ideal conditions, while the alcohol in my system sirupts any potential virus spreading.
Though this could also be why it’s taking so long to get my wife pregnant. but hey, no sniffles!
I got a flu shot and I still got the flu. The shot is just a best guess as to what’s going to be coming around. Sometimes, they get it right, sometimes they miss a little. It’s second guessing mutations that haven’t happened yet. A flu shot’s not a guarantee. It’s better chance than w/o one though.
My oldest son got the shot a couple of weeks ago when he got his allergy shots–he has asthma so it was a definite go on the flu shot. I haven’t gotten the shot, but I think I might. It seems like everyone around here is coming down with it. And last night, my youngest came home feeling sick so he’s home in bed, coughing and weezing
Well, it might not work in the water supply. Plus, I know that if you’re allergic to chicken or eggs, you’re supposed to let the doctor or other medical person know about it.
I got mine back around September or October. I’ve found that I seem to get fewer colds when I get the flu shot, for some reason. I KNOW I get fewer episodes of bronchitis.
My husbands employeer just offered flu shots to everyone at work. My husband declined.
I think I will take the misskids to get flu shots today. I am sure it will be a less than fun expierence for me, but keeping them safe is far more important.
I didn’t even know they had flu shots. Is it really the exact same disease, all over the country…? Everyone in my family except me has had a cold in the past week, but I’ve escaped it as yet. (Thank God, since it’s finals week! I always get sick on finals week…) I can feel it in my lungs already though. I think it’s too late for me.
Poor Mr. Pug was so extremely sick last night that he said he thought he was going to die, and now he’s coughing up yellow stuff. At what point should one go to the doctor? It’s not like antibiotics is going to cure flu, so is there a point?
Tanaqui, remember that colds aren’t the flu. The flu is nasty - weakness, fever, exhaustion, etc. I’m not sure if the strain of flu going around is a single strain, but this year’s vaccine should work against the two most likely strains and probably provide some protection against others.
pugluvr, I don’t know at what point you should go, but a doctor could at least advise you on whether Mr. Pug might have picked up a secondary bacterial infection or something similar. Call your doctor’s office and see if the doctor or nurse can give any advice over the phone based on a listing of symptoms.
The particular brand of flu I got last week left me with a damn fever and wheezing cough.
The doctor prescribed me some ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin will do) for the fever, Claritin for the sneezing I assume, and some Robitussin for the cough.
After a few days rest, I’m feeling good. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, people.
My 3 y.o. daughter’s the only one it the family to get the shot. However, we passed on giving her the booster later because of concern on the mercury in it being a potential cause of autism. It was a tough choice. What to do?

Started having symptoms friday, was miserable by saturday, saw a doctor on sunday (figured my temperature was way too high for a cold), who gave an influenza test (positive) and a prescription for “TamiFlu.”
Was feeling noticeably better monday afternoon, and I plan on going to work tomorrow. I only had the worst flu symptoms for a couple days–not as good as no flu (I’m getting the shot next year!), but better then a week of misery.
Evidently TamiFlu only works if you’ve been symptomatic for 48 hours or less (so you have to go to the doctor early). It can also be used to prevent infection (useful for families, I’d imagine).
