Damon to the Yankees? Man I hate the Yankees...

[singing]Shave and haircut, 52 mill…[/singing]

The only satisfaction that Boston will have from this will be seeing Samson with his locks shorn. Please don’t take even that from us…

I like the deal. Damon may not have a cannon for an arm, but he does cover the ground and that’s a plus in spacious Yankee Stadium. I don’t know if defensively he’s better than Bubba Crosby but he does provide the leadoff spark that they need.

I think Matsui is a journeyman left fielder. Certainly he played that position better than Womack did last year (who wouldn’t?). I think LF is a place where you can hide an average glove and arm. His bat makes up for his ordinaryness in defense.

Sheffield may not have a great deal of range but he has the arm for RF. I don’t know if there’s a Gold Glove out there, but the offense of this outfield is impressive.

With the solid IF except possibly 1B, this should be a competent defensive team. Certainly the offense is there. Like always, the need is in starting pitching. Whatever possessed the Yankees to take Kevin Brown is beyond me, ditto Jeff Weaver and Jon Lieber. Mussina really is the only fairly recent big name acquisition on the mound that has produced in the Bronx.

I sincerely hope you get to gloat for our Giants and Yankees. I just meant in this thread.
I sometimes think the average RedSox fan is not happy if they don’t have something to be unhappy about.

Jim

Johnson didn’t suck, Lieber was a cheap investment that worked out ok.
Trading Lilly for Weaver was dumb on 3 levels, Lilly was younger, a lot cheaper and LEFTY. Trading Weaver for Brown was trade a problem for a bigger problem.

No, Johnson didn’t suck, but he didn’t carry the team like you expect of him, either. His age is starting to show. Lieber filled some innings- that’s really about all that was expected of him. It wouldn’t be fair to call him a stinker, he’s just one of those guys that can’t seem to stay healthy.

I heard this same talk from April to July.

As I said in the other thread, it’s a good signing, and they didn’t get taken to the cleaners for a ton of money or extra years. He covers ground in center, which Bernie can’t do anymore, and they’ve needed a real leadoff hitter for years. Boston didn’t make much of an effort to keep him. It’s much the same story the Yankees had with Andy Pettitte a few years ago. And while I’m sure he wanted the money, it’s also true that most of the players from the championship team and atmosphere is gone from Boston.

Look, is ANYBODY over the age of 10 surprised by this?

Yankee fans may hate the Red Sox, and Red Sox fans may hate the Yankees, but you know what? There’s not a SINGLE player on EITHER team that wouldn’t jump to the other side in a heartbeat if he could get a nickel more.

Bernie Williams nearly jumped to the Red Sox not so long ago. It works both ways. Baseball players are mercenaries, nothing more. To think they love or hate any team as much as you do is childish.

Another convert to the siren call of the Beautiful Bronx. We’re irresistable. Face it.

Especially Baseball players that hire Boris.

On the other hand Paul O’Neil took a below market value deal, very quickly to avoid any discussion of not being a Yankee. He Loved the Yanks and got a stern talking to by the Union. I’m sure at least 1 out of every 100 players does have true loyalty.

Jim

God, I hate the Yankees.

I don’t care about this stupid deal, it’s not like I’m a Red Sox fan. Just…god, I hate the Yankees.
