This will be our 2nd Annual Dance Like a Pirate party, and I thought I’d ask for suggestions on dance-able shanties or Pirate themed rump shakers from y’all.
I don’t have my playlist handy, but I’ll post it for you to see what we have so far, but off the top of my head I have:
Abney Park - Airship Pirates
Abney Park - Throw Them Overboard
Abney Park - Victoria (maybe?)
Abney Park - Aether Shanty (maybe?)
Abney Park - **The Derelict(CERTAINLY! It uses “Fifteen Men On A Dead Man’s Chest/Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum”!)
** Their site. Edit: Admittedly I haven’t kept up with them too much since Nathaniel Johnstone left (the previous awesome violinist/guitarist) to form his own band. But what I have listed is good.
I’d say just about anything by the Pogues.
Sure, it’s more Irish folk punk, but I think you can get that pirate feel from it.
Especially the album; Rum, Sodomy & the Lash.
Try these tunes: Sally MacLennane Billy’s Bones The Gentleman Soldier
And for something a bit slower; Dirty Old Town Great to sing-a-long to.
Basically the entire album A Pirate Broadcast by the Hellblinki Sextext. Although I guess It Comes to This and A Dementish Waltz are the fan favorites.
It features 43 songs from the genre (some traditional, some covers, some original) by artists such as Bono, Sting, but also a lot of good ones like Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry, Nick Cave, Loudon Wainwright III (who contributes a hilarious rendition of ‘Good Ship Venus’, also known as ‘Friggin’ in the Riggin’’, the Sex Pistols’ version of which has already been mentioned upthread) (actually, the whole Wainwright family – his son, Rufus, and wife, Kate McGarrigle – are on there, too), John C. Reilly (the actor), Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp-fame), Lou Reed, Antony Hegarty, Gavin Friday… It’s really pretty much tailor-made for your party (though you might have to skip over a not-too-danceable track or two).
