Pick three FANTASTIC party songs for a diverse group

I’m putting together my annual Block Party mix for this week’s block party in my neighborhood.

I always get boatloads of compliments on my choices, which I make very carefully.

It’s a wide range of people, because it’s a block party and it’s a pretty diverse neighborhood. We have children up to 90 year olds, every ethnicity and background.

I have a huge MP3 collection but I can’t go through it all - I thought maybe y’all could point at some good tunes.

I only use songs that are, in my opinion at least, really excellent - very memorable, catchy, upbeat. I like to balance between well-known (but not frequently played) hits of every decade, and lesser-known, even obscure songs that are so good that even though they aren’t familiar, they still immediately grab your attention and make you want to dance or at least smile.

Hotel Costes - Skip to the Bip

The B52’s - The Love Shack

Timo Maas - To Get Down

Agree with Love Shack.

I’d play Good Times by Chic and Celebration by Kool & The Gang.

Assagai’s version of Hey Jude

“The Indian Beatles” - I Wanna Hold Your Hand

Daddy Yankee - Gasolina

“Steady As She Goes” by the Raconteurs
“Down on the Corner” by Credence Clearwater Revival
“Pata Pata” by Miriam Makeba

We are in tune, Ex… I welcome any other suggestions. LOVE “Skip…”

Krok: Pata is great, I have that… Down on the corner…good. I have never heard “Steady” that I know of. I’ll have to track it down.

I like Gasolina but I think I’d hate it after a short time.

Thanks!

I’d love to hear more… I have to put together almost 8 hours of music.

Didn’t take much tracking… it’s in my collection. (I have 70,000 MP3s…, it’s sick - almost all I ripped from friend’s collections for them, in exchange for the copy.)

Miike Snow - Animal (Fake Blood Remix)

Darwin Deez - Radar Detector

The New Pornographers - Letter from an Occupant

I’d go to that party, with a sixer of Flying Dog in tow.

Bonus pick:
LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean*

*This track is so awesome, but the intro is mixed much quieter. When it drops though, it REALLY drops.

[li]“Koo Koo”, by Sheila E.[/li][li]“Endicott”, by Kid Creole and the Coconuts[/li][li]“The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum”, by Fun Boy Three[/li][/ul]

Caramelldansen

(They’ll tear you apart. )

“Don’t Upset the Rhythm”, by the Noisettes.

The video is lame the the song is great.

Roll With the Changes, by REO Speedwagon.

Well, so far I don’t absolutely hate very many, which is a good sign. A lot I will enjoy for myself, but not for the party.

Sunshine: LOVE the LCD! FAAAAB.

Trying to cover pop, rock and hip-hop:

Madonna - ‘Hung Up’ or ‘Music’, both fairly recent (i.e. from the last decade) and huge hits likely to be known by everyone. I know that ‘Hung Up’ was much more popular outside of America (the US was one of the only countries in the world that it only went top ten and didn’t hit number one) so maybe ‘4 Minutes’ would be a better choice if you’re in the US.

Nirvana - ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ (as if anyone needs a link), this is such an obvious choice but I have never been in a party situation where this song didn’t “go off”, as they say. From suburban barbeques to gay clubs, it works every single time.

Run-D.M.C. vs. Jason Nevins - ‘It’s Like That’, a remix from the late nineties which is an absolute classic.

Not sure if they’re appropriate/would work for you, but those are the three that came to mind immediately!

Just Three?

Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex (other mixes out there)

Gimme Some Lovin’ - Spencer Davis Group

(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson

I have no self control:

Little Willy - The Sweet

Obla-Di, Obla-Da - The Beatles

Mmbop - Hansen

Stopping soon…

Steal My Sunshine - LEM

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves

I Want You Back - Jackson Five

The Middle - Jimmy Eat World

Unbelievable - EMF

I Want You to Want Me - Cheap Trick

Good luck, man.

Three I would definitely put in my mix:

Bama Lama Lama Loo by Elvis Costello

Hangin’ Round by Lou Reed

Hotel Yorba by White Stripes
