Months ago, when my wife saw that Michael Crawford was going to be in the new Broadway musical “Dance of the Vampires,” she got me to buy tickets for late December, when we’ll be there.
I’ve already seen the reviews (in the Times, most importantly), and they’re uniformly awful. Major musicals don’t usually last long when they’re panned THIS badly by the Times, so my hunch is, the show will be history long before we get to New York… if it isn’t already.
Has anybody read/heard anything official? Will the show be closing very soon? (If so, I guess I’ll have to get a refund, and scramble to get tickets for something else.)
ON the other hand: Jekyll & Hyde open to almost as awful reviews, but because it’d been cleverly marketed it already had a cult following (and I mean in the Jim Jones way, not the Eating Raoul way…I mean, they were called…Jekkies). So despite the New York press’s best efforts it survived for some time. Hell, it might even still be playing, although I will not soil my keybord by composing a search on relevant terms.
I actually went on a date with the music director for this horror. I did much nodding and smiled a bit over-brightly, I figured he was used to that in his field. He didn’t appear to notice and I declined to return his phone call. Thank god. I mean, what would I have done: " BWAHAAHAHA, man there’s nothing like a really bad notice to make you wake up and face the day, is there? That Ben Brantley is a pisser when he’s in the right mood…"
