Dancing on the grave of health care "reform"

Yeah, whatever. Don’t you have anything better to do on a Saturday night than to follow me around biting my ankle?

Hmmm, ‘whatever’, very convincing. If you must know, I’m at home sick with pneumonia, so I don’t have anything else to do. Don’t you have anything better to do, you wild, crazy, guy you?

Bingo Night is over at ten o’clock.

Not at the moment. Wild and crazy nights don’t follow a weekend schedule with me anymore. That’s one of the things you’ll appreciate when you get older.

And despite everything I hope you’ll get to feeling better soon. Pneumonia is no fun.

How do you know?

As for myself, I’d have no idea.

Woah don’t goad him, jesus christ. You’re risking life and limb by doing such silly things.

It’s far easier to just say goodnight.

Hey! I think SA is as nutty as most of you, but he’s got fairly good taste in music. If you think Stevie Ray Vaughn, Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Elton John, Santana, Eric Clapton, NIN and Dave Brubeck are shitty then you have a very warped view of music. I’m not into any of those people, at all, but even I recognize the major talents involved.

I can speak about the ones he mentioned I do know about:

Franchesca Gagnon was good enough for Cirque du Soleil, who are well-known for using freaking great music. (she sang for the CDS show “Algeria” but she’s actually Canadian, here’s another song)

Corrine Bailey Rae is fantastic. (Cite. Cite. Cite. Cite. Cite. Cite.)

I’ve never heard of Valeska Jacobowicz and can’t find (her? him?) anywhere on the net. Now I’m curious. Who that SA?

Man, I feel the same way. Sometimes I’ll want to post something personal, then I think “What kind of snarky comment about this could Starving Artist come up with during some future tiff?” and I stop myself. The thought of you has stopped me posting more things that you could ever possibly know or even imagine. Thank you.
On topic: GLOAT!

Here ya go. My brother got her tune “I Put A What” from a commercial music licensing service for his photography studio, and I wanted to hear more of her stuff but couldn’t find an album anywhere. So I emailed her in Germany and she was kind enough to send me an album’s worth of stuff for my iPod with the agreement that I wasn’t to put any of it on the internet or pass it on to anyone else. I like all her stuff and find that the more I listen to it the more I like it. But having said that I particularly like “I Put A What”, “April Weather” and “Private Life”.

Have you forgotten that I apologized for doing that before? It has never been my intention to make you feel sorry for any aspect of your private life or relationships. You hereby have my word that I will never make fun of you for anything but your politics from this point forward.

Besides, I’ve developed enough of an admiration for your encyclopedic knowledge of all things musical and moviecal that it’s hard to get all that cranked at you anymore.

Missed the edit window. Here’s a fabulous version of Franchesca Gagnon singing Alegria that I thought you might like, Equipoise.

P.P.S. - In case you should happen to wonder about the song being sampled on “I Put A What”, it’s I Put A Spell On You, a 1956 tune by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. (But you probably already knew that. ;))

(And apologies for the hijack, but hell, it’s late and nobody else is posting anything anyway. :D)

I kind of like it when people you are politically completely opposed to show the other side of their personality and you realise there actually is a person in there.

Oh! Valeska Jakobowicz. No wonder I couldn’t find her. I’m not being bitchy because it’s misspelled, just pointing out that it can make a big difference when searching. The correct spelling brought up all kinds of links.

I just noticed something surreal and dejavuey perusing her MySpace page. As you may or may not know I started and maintain HTR’s MySpace page. Just Friday I got an add request there from Office Ekiti, who is Valeska’s top friend, and Valeska is Office Ekiti’s top friend.

Office Ekiti is Valeska’s record label! If I had been paying a little bit more attention, I would have heard of her yesterday. I swear I’m not making this up!

I denied the add request, the way I do most add requests from bands and record labels, but now I wish I had accepted.

Yeah, you did, thanks. I couldn’t help myself from tweaking you, but you have my word I won’t do it again either.

Oh stop it! You’re making it hard for me to get cranked up at you anymore. I still think you’re a loonball. :stuck_out_tongue:

I know Jay’s version, but to me, it’ll always be Nina Simone’s “I Put A Spell On You.”

I was just listening to that Algeria song. I almost linked to it too.

At least one with great taste in music.

I always do that! I’ve always done that! Why do I keep doing that? I know better. Argh!

It’s

Alegría

Yeah, sorry about that. Amusingly enough I had a feeling I was misspelling her last name and even checked online, but I was focusing on the vowells and never noticed the “k/c” swappage.

So what did you think of her? I’m guessing you found her rather lightweight, as her voice is a little thin and there isn’t much instrumentation backing her. But there’s an appealing feminine quality to her voioce, even in its lower registers, that I like and she’s an artistic person who I find interesting. Here’s a link to her homepage if you’d like to explore her a little further.

P.S. - Thanks for the Nina Simone link. Wow! I saw that there was a version by her when I was looking up Hawkins on Youtube and I meant to come back and listen to it, but I got distracted and never made it back. Without your link I probably wouldn’t have thought of it again.

Yeah, with the exceptions of some NIN and Dave Brubeck and a couple Elton John songs, I think they’re all shitty. Corinne Bailey Rae is the definition of bland, and white blues and jazz-rock bore the shit out of me. The skill of the players doesn’t mean anything to me; I’m going by what moves me. Maybe that makes my musical tastes “warped”, and if you want to start a thread on it, I’ll participate. But let’s try to focus on Sa’s idiotic talking points here.

No Zappa. Pretty much says it all.

ZAPPA??

Grrrr…

I meant to mention that I like her a lot! Thanks for bringing her to my attention (and you’re welcome for the Nina link). I don’t think she’s lightweight, though she’s not going to break into my Musical Goddess ranks at this point. But I do like her music much more than, say, Corrine Bailey Rae, who has the voice but needs to get weirder and more experimental before I’d become a big fan. I don’t think Corrine’s music is so bland exactly, as woody said, but it is much blander than what I usually listen to. Valeska has the experimental streak that makes me pay attention. I like all the songs you like, but I was also grinning in discovery at the two songs hidden at the bottom of the player, “Private Life” and “Instant Garden.” I will be keeping an eye on her.

Two links for you:

A podcast with lots of, IMO, interesting music. You won’t like everything, but I’ll bet you’ll like some things.

Have you heard of Noe Venable?

I can’t think of a more boring and stupid topic than discussing your assertion that ALL music you’re not into and that doesn’t move you is automatically “shitty” by definition. That’s what’s warped, not the fact that you don’t like them. As I said, I’m not into them either. My only reaction to such a thread would be:  so it’s best if I didn’t participate, let alone start one.
looks around

What, this isn’t Cafe Society?

Shit.

points and laughs at Rand Rover

Great! I just listened to her again for the first time in quite a while and I’m embarrassed to admit that she’s quite a bit better than I remembered. If I had gone back and become reacquainted with her a little more before I posted I probably wouldn’t have said that. She really is good.

Yeah, I think her music would appeal to a demographic that is considerably different than you. I love both her voice and sweet style but I know it isn’t for everybody. I suppose you know that her husband tragically died a couple of years ago and that until recently she had completely stopped recording and performing. It really (and understandably) knocked the slats out from under her, and frankly I was afraid that when she returned her sweet, happy style would have been supplanted with a darker one and I was glad to see that that wasn’t the case, though I can certainly see how her style wouldn’t appeal to everyone.

And thanks for the other links too. I’ll check them out, and no, I haven’t heard of Noe Venable but I’m looking forward to checking her out. Knowing you, I’m sure she’ll be good.

P.S. - Pssst…if you haven’t seen any of my previous posts about Imelda May, you might want to check her out too. Jeff Beck is a huge fan. (Here’s a sample, notice David Gilmour and Jeff Beck at the beginning. She’s a dynamite performer and does lots of rockabilly stuff but in a fresh new way. I think you’ll appreciate her band too (her husband is the guitarist).

Sorry, amanset, I meant to answer this earlier. Yeah, it is nice. Sometimes I think I oughta just concentrate on this kind of stuff and leave the politics alone…but then I think, Nah!

Still, thanks for your comment. It is nice when adversaries can come to a meeting of the minds on other subjects. Equipoise has a truly extraordinary knowledge of and taste in movies and music - especially music - and I’m glad we’ve become friends. She’s become one of my go-to sources when I want to learn something about any musical artist, song or movie. I’m glad we’re on speaking terms.
And now, we return you to the Pit thread on health care reform, already in progress.

I meant if you wanted to start a thread about “Music you don’t like” or something, not a thread based on my specific definition of shitty. But yeah, music I don’t like is generally my definition of “shitty”, as it is for most people. Pretty much all music is made by people with some degree of talent, and pretty much every musical act has its fans; neither of those has anything to do with why any individual would think they suck. If you’re talking about shitty musicians, that’s a totally different thing. Anyway, enough of this CS hijack.
